What You'll Need
About This Game
Part of the GIPF Project. Flip rings and form rows of 5 to score. Elegant and deep.
How to Play
- Players alternate placing 5 rings each on the intersections of the board
- On your turn, place a marker in one of your rings, then move that ring
- Rings move in straight lines, jumping over markers (which flip to the other color)
- When you create a row of 5 markers in your color, remove them and one of your rings
- Removing a ring is your goal — but fewer rings means fewer moves
- First player to remove 3 of their rings wins
- If a row of 5 is formed for both players simultaneously, the moving player resolves first
History & Background
Yinsh is part of the GIPF Project, an ambitious series of abstract strategy games created by Belgian designer Kris Burm beginning in 1997. The project consists of six interconnected games—GIPF, Zertz, Dvonn, Gipf, Yinsh, and Pünct—each exploring different mathematical and tactical principles while sharing a common design philosophy of elegant simplicity masking profound strategic depth.
Yinsh specifically debuted in 2003 and immediately distinguished itself through its core tension: the act of winning (removing rings) simultaneously weakens your position (reducing available moves). This paradox became a hallmark of Burm's design philosophy and makes Yinsh uniquely rewarding for competitive two-player gaming. The game's clean ruleset and 20-30 minute playtime made it accessible to newcomers while its reversible ring mechanic—flipping markers as rings jump over them—creates emergent complexity that keeps experienced players engaged across hundreds of plays.
The game has earned widespread critical acclaim in the abstract strategy community, with devoted tournaments and enthusiast groups worldwide. Yinsh exemplifies how modern board game design can strip away unnecessary chrome to reveal pure mechanical elegance. Its impact extends beyond casual play; it's studied by game designers as a masterclass in balancing simplicity and depth, making it essential for anyone serious about two-player abstract competition.
