About This Game

A classic strategy game played on the dark squares of an 8x8 board. Players advance their pieces diagonally, capturing opponents by jumping over them.

How to Play

**Objective:** Capture all your opponent's pieces or block them so they cannot move.

**Setup:**

  • 8×8 board; each player has 12 pieces on dark squares in their 3 closest rows
  • Dark pieces always move first

**Basic Movement:**

  • Pieces move diagonally forward only, one square at a time, on dark squares only

**Capturing:**

  • Jump diagonally over an adjacent opponent piece into the empty square beyond
  • Multi-jump: if another capture is available after a jump, you MUST continue
  • Capturing is mandatory — you must jump if a jump is available

**Becoming a King:**

  • Reach your opponent's back row → piece becomes a king (mark with captured piece on top)
  • Kings move and capture in ALL four diagonal directions

**Winning:** Capture all opponent's pieces, OR block all opponent's pieces so they can't move.

**Strategy:** Trade when ahead; avoid trades when behind. Get kings as quickly as possible.

History & Background

Checkers originated in southern France around 1100 AD when an unknown innovator combined the rules of Alquerque (an ancient Middle Eastern game) with the 8x8 chessboard. This fusion created a faster-paced, more accessible strategy game that quickly spread throughout Europe, where it became known as Jeu de Dames (Game of Ladies) in France and Draughts in English-speaking regions. The game's popularity soared because it maintained strategic complexity while being significantly easier to learn than chess.

During the Renaissance, Checkers became a staple of European courts and coffeehouses, evolving into a game of serious competitive play. The modern rules—including mandatory captures and the promotion of pieces to "Kings"—were standardized by the 16th century, though variations like International Draughts (played on a 10x10 board) emerged in different regions. The game's elegant mechanics made it a symbol of intellectual leisure across social classes.

Checkers remains culturally significant as the first game where a computer program defeated a world champion in a best-of-match series (1994), demonstrating its surprising computational depth. Today, it continues to captivate casual players and serious competitors alike, proving that timeless gameplay mechanics—forcing meaningful tactical decisions within minutes—never go out of style. Its legacy as the "thinking person's quick game" endures globally.
