What You'll Need
About This Game
A strategy game of outflanking. Players place discs to flip opponent's pieces, with the lead often swinging dramatically. Simple to learn, difficult to master.
How to Play
**Objective:** Have more of your discs on the board than your opponent when no moves remain.
**Setup:** 8×8 grid; start with 4 discs in center (2 dark, 2 light in diagonal positions); dark plays first.
**Placing Discs:**
- Place your disc to "flank" opponent's discs — your new disc + existing disc sandwich opponent discs in a straight line
- ALL flanked opponent discs flip to your color immediately
- You MUST make a move that flips at least one disc; if no valid move, pass
**Winning:** Most discs when board is full or neither player can move.
**Strategy:**
- **Corners are king:** Corner discs can never be flipped
- **Avoid C/X squares:** Adjacent-to-corner squares let opponent take the corner
- **Mobility:** Keep options open with many valid moves

History & Background
Othello, known internationally as Reversi, has a fascinating history rooted in 19th-century game design innovation. The game was invented in 1883 by Lewis Waterman, an English game enthusiast, who patented it under the name "Reversi." However, the game gained its most recognizable name "Othello" in 1971 when businessman James F. Britton trademarked and commercialized it, drawing inspiration from Shakespeare's tragic play about shifting alliances and reversals of fortune—a fitting metaphor for the game's dramatic lead changes during two-player matches.
What makes Othello particularly significant is how it demonstrates the power of elegant game design: with just nine simple rules, it creates extraordinary strategic depth. The game became a cultural phenomenon in Japan during the 1970s and 1980s, where it developed a competitive following rivaling chess in some regions. Japanese players elevated the game to an art form, discovering complex opening strategies and endgame techniques that revolutionized how the two-player game was understood globally. The World Othello Championship, first held in 1977, has been dominated by Japanese competitors, cementing the nation's influence on competitive play.
The game's enduring appeal lies in its perfect balance between accessibility and complexity. New players can grasp the rules in minutes, yet professionals spend years mastering positional tactics, corner control, and edge strategies. Computer analysis has added another dimension, with AI programs like Logistello achieving superhuman levels of play. Today, Othello remains a staple of two-player competitive gaming, equally cherished by casual players seeking quick strategic fun and serious competitors pursuing championship glory.
