About This Game

A game of military strategy and bluffing. Players deploy armies with hidden ranks, then maneuver to capture the opponent's flag while protecting their own.

How to Play

**Objective:** Capture your opponent's Flag, or eliminate all their moveable pieces.

**Setup:** Each player secretly places 40 pieces on 4 back rows. Piece ranks: 10=Marshal, 9=General...3=Miner (defuses Bombs), 2=Scout (moves any distance), 1=Spy (defeats Marshal only), B=Bomb, F=Flag.

**Movement:** Most pieces move 1 square; Scout moves any distance; Bombs/Flag can't move.

**Attacking:** Move to opponent's square; higher rank wins; tie = both removed. Bomb defeats all except Miners; Spy defeats Marshal only.

**Winning:** Capture the Flag, OR opponent cannot make a legal move.

History & Background

Stratego was invented in 1942 by Jacques Fueterer, a Belgian game designer, originally under the name "L'Attaque" (The Attack). The game was first published in Belgium and quickly spread throughout Europe during the post-war era, becoming a sensation for its innovative use of hidden information in a war-themed strategy game. In 1961, the game was licensed and released in the United States under the name Stratego by Milton Bradley, where it achieved widespread popularity and became a classic fixture in American households.

The game's appeal lies in its elegant balance of perfect information and deduction—while players can see the board state, they must deduce their opponent's piece positions through tactical play and psychological bluffing. This unique mechanic made it a breakthrough title in the strategy genre, influencing numerous games that followed. Over the decades, Stratego has been reimagined multiple times with different themes and rule variations, but the core gameplay remains unchanged. The 1961 Milton Bradley version became the standard, and the game has maintained a devoted following among strategy game enthusiasts. Its emphasis on hidden information and two-player head-to-head competition makes it particularly engaging for players seeking games that reward both strategic thinking and psychological insight.
