What You'll Need
About This Game
An asymmetric card-driven game recreating the Watergate scandal. One player is Nixon trying to survive, the other is the press trying to connect evidence to the President.
How to Play
- One player is the Nixon Administration, the other is the Editor (Washington Post)
- Play cards for their event text OR their value (initiative, investigation, momentum)
- Editor tries to connect evidence tokens to informants on the evidence board
- Nixon tries to block connections and gain momentum
- Each round: alternate playing cards, pulling tokens toward your side of the tug-of-war tracks
- Editor wins by connecting 2 evidence tokens to the same informant
- Nixon wins by building enough momentum (reaching the end of the momentum track)
- After 5 rounds, Nixon wins if the Editor hasn't completed their investigation
History & Background
Watergate: A Game of Politics was designed by Molly Johnson, David Thompson, and Ananda Gupta, releasing in 2021 from Osprey Games. The designers created an asymmetric experience that captures the inherent tension between the Nixon Administration and the investigative journalism that brought it down—one of the most pivotal political moments in American history. Rather than creating a traditional symmetric game, the designers recognized that the real drama of Watergate came from two opposing forces with fundamentally different goals and capabilities: a president fighting for survival and journalists pursuing the truth. The game's card-driven mechanics and tug-of-war tracks elegantly mirror the historical push-and-pull between the White House's defense and the Washington Post's investigation. Watergate has gained recognition in the board game community for its historical authenticity combined with engaging gameplay, winning the Golden Geek Award for Best Two-Player Board Game in 2022. The game's design demonstrates how asymmetry creates natural tension and player engagement, with each side having distinct strategies and win conditions that feel thematic and earned. Its success sparked renewed interest in political and historical board games that explore complex real-world events through interactive mechanics rather than passive storytelling.
