TZAAR was created by Kris Burm in 2007 as part of his ambitious GIPF Project—a series of seven abstract strategy games designed to explore different tactical and strategic themes. Published by Smart Games, TZAAR stands out as one of the most mechanically innovative games in the series, introducing the crucial mechanic of forced captures combined with piece stacking.

The game's design philosophy centers on creating meaningful tension through asymmetric piece types and the threat system.
