What You'll Need

🎯 TZAAR board and pieces

About This Game

Stack, capture, and threaten. Keep all three piece types alive while eliminating your opponent's.

How to Play

  1. Place all pieces on the board in the starting position
  2. Three piece types: Tzaars, Tzarras, Tott (each player has 6+9+15)
  3. On your turn, you MUST first capture an opponent's piece (move onto it)
  4. Then you may either capture again OR stack two of your own pieces
  5. Stacked pieces move as one and can capture equal or shorter stacks
  6. You lose if: you lose all pieces of any one type, or you cannot capture on your first action
  7. Protect all three types while eliminating one of your opponent's

History & Background

TZAAR was created by Kris Burm in 2007 as part of his ambitious GIPF Project—a series of seven abstract strategy games designed to explore different tactical and strategic themes. Published by Smart Games, TZAAR stands out as one of the most mechanically innovative games in the series, introducing the crucial mechanic of forced captures combined with piece stacking.

The game's design philosophy centers on creating meaningful tension through asymmetric piece types and the threat system. Unlike traditional capture games, TZAAR requires players to maintain balance across three different piece families, making it impossible to focus on a single strategy. This design elegantly forces players into difficult decisions: do you eliminate one type of your opponent's pieces, or do you protect your own vulnerable units?

Since its release, TZAAR has earned recognition among abstract game enthusiasts for its elegant ruleset and surprising strategic depth. Despite the 20-30 minute playtime, the game generates intense moments of decision-making comparable to much longer titles. The active threat mechanic—where pieces can be in danger at any moment—creates a dynamic board state that prevents either player from ever feeling secure. Today, TZAAR remains a favorite in competitive abstract gaming circles and represents a pinnacle of two-player abstract design where simple rules mask profound strategic complexity.
