About This Game

An elegant abstract played on four boards. Push stones on one board, then mirror the move on another. Push all opponent stones off any board to win.

How to Play

SETUP: Shobu is played on four 4x4 boards arranged in a 2x2 grid. Each player receives 16 stones in their color (typically one player uses light stones, the other dark). Players place their stones on the two boards closest to them—8 stones on each of their two boards, filling the first two rows. The boards are arranged so players sit opposite each other.

GAMEPLAY: On your turn, you must perform two moves in this exact order:

  1. PUSH MOVE: Select one of your stones on any board and push it in a straight line (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) into an adjacent empty space or into an opponent's stone, pushing that opponent's stone further along the same line. You must push at least one space and can push multiple stones in a line, but you can only push if there is an empty space beyond the last stone to accommodate the push. If you push an opponent's stone off the edge of the board, it is removed from the game.
  1. MIRROR MOVE: After your push move, you must immediately make an identical move on a different board. The mirror move must be the same direction and distance as your push move, using one of your stones on that different board. The mirror move follows the same pushing rules—you can push your opponent's stones off that board as well. If you cannot legally perform the mirror move on any other board, your turn ends and you lose your push move (the push move is undone).

WINNING CONDITION: The first player to remove all 16 of their opponent's stones from the boards wins the game. This can happen gradually across multiple turns as stones are pushed off the boards.

KEY RULES: You cannot pass your turn. You must complete both a push move and a mirror move each turn, or your turn is forfeited and reversed. Stones can only be pushed in straight lines. Diagonal pushes are allowed.

History & Background

Shobu is a modern abstract strategy game designed by Néstor Romeral Andrés and first released in 2019. Despite its recent creation, Shobu quickly gained recognition in the board game community for its elegant simplicity and strategic depth, earning a nomination for the prestigious Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) award in 2020. The game's design philosophy draws inspiration from classic abstract games like Chess and Go, but introduces a unique mechanical twist that sets it apart from traditional strategy games.

The game's defining feature—the mandatory mirror move mechanic—creates an innovative puzzle where players must think two moves ahead simultaneously. This design creates surprising strategic interactions, as a move that seems advantageous on one board may force you into a disadvantageous position on another. The constraint that both moves must be identical in direction and distance transforms Shobu from a simple pushing game into a game of careful spatial planning and foresight. This mechanic has made it particularly appealing to both casual players seeking an accessible entry point into abstract strategy games and experienced gamers looking for novel strategic challenges.

Since its release, Shobu has become a staple in modern board game collections and competitive gaming circles. The game's minimalist aesthetics—with its clean 4x4 boards and simple stone pieces—reflect the designer's commitment to clarity and elegance. Its relatively short play time of 15-30 minutes, combined with moderate complexity, has made it particularly popular for tournament play and casual gatherings. The game represents a new wave of modern abstract design that respects the tradition of classic strategy games while introducing fresh mechanical innovations that appeal to contemporary players.
