What You'll Need
About This Game
A tile-based game mixing rummy-style set collection with spatial puzzle-solving. You form runs and groups on the table, then rearrange everything to play more tiles from your rack. The manipulation phase is where the real game lives.
How to Play
**Setup:** 106 tiles total (numbers 1-13 in four colors, two copies of each, plus 2 jokers). Each player draws 14 tiles for their rack.
**Initial meld:** Your first play must total at least 30 points. You can use one or more sets: runs (3+ consecutive same-color tiles) or groups (3-4 same-number different-color tiles).
**Gameplay:** On your turn, play tiles from your rack by:
- Adding to existing sets on the table
- Creating new sets
- Rearranging tiles already on the table to create valid new configurations
All sets on the table must be valid when your turn ends. If you can't play, draw a tile.
**Jokers:** Jokers substitute for any tile. A joker on the table can be freed by replacing it with the tile it represents.
**Winning:** First player to empty their rack. Other players subtract the total value of their remaining tiles from their score.
History & Background
Ephraim Hertzano, a Romanian-born Israeli, created Rummikub in the early 1940s. He hand-made the first sets in his backyard. The game sold modestly in Israel for decades before international distribution began in the 1970s. It became the best-selling game in America in 1977 and won the Spiel des Jahres (German Game of the Year) in 1980. It has sold over 80 million copies worldwide.
