What You'll Need
About This Game
A deck-building race game through the jungle. Buy cards to improve your deck while moving your explorer across terrain toward the golden city.
How to Play
SETUP: Each player receives an identical starting deck of 8 cards (machete, rope, and provisions cards) and places their explorer pawn at the jungle start. Shuffle the market deck and lay out 5 cards as the available market. Set the jungle map between players with various terrain tiles creating a path to El Dorado.
GAMEPLAY: On your turn, execute these steps in order:
- Play cards from your hand to determine movement. Each card shows terrain symbols (jungle, river, mountain) and movement points. You can only move through terrain matching your played cards.
- Move your explorer along the jungle path by spending movement points on terrain obstacles. Different terrain requires specific card types; playing the right cards lets you move farther.
- Purchase new cards from the market using gold earned from your played cards. This improves your deck for future turns. Discard all played cards.
- Draw 5 new cards from your personal deck. If your deck runs out, shuffle your discard pile as your new deck.
PLAYER INTERACTION: Both players move simultaneously on the same jungle path, creating a race dynamic. The map is shared, so strategic card purchases matter—if one player dominates river cards, the other must adapt.
WINNING: The first player to move their explorer completely across the jungle and reach El Dorado wins immediately. There are no ties.
KEY MECHANICS: This is a deck-building race, combining strategic card acquisition with tactical movement. Your deck improves as you buy better cards, creating a satisfying progression. The 2-player format intensifies competition since you're constantly aware of your opponent's progress and deck strength.
GAME LENGTH: Most 2-player sessions complete in 30-45 minutes, making it ideal for quick competitive sessions.
History & Background
Quest for El Dorado was designed by Reiner Knizia and published by Ravensburger in 2017, emerging at a time when deck-building games had become a popular mechanic in modern board gaming. Knizia, a legendary German game designer known for elegant mechanics and thematic depth, sought to create a racing game that combined the strategic card acquisition of deck-builders like Dominion with the spatial tension of movement-based competition. The result was a game that democratized deck-building by making it accessible to casual players while maintaining strategic depth for competitive enthusiasts.
The game's theme of racing through a jungle toward the legendary golden city of El Dorado resonates with classic adventure narratives that have captivated audiences for centuries. By marrying this timeless exploration fantasy with contemporary gaming mechanics, Knizia created a title that appealed to both traditional board gamers and newcomers. The simultaneous movement system was particularly innovative for its 2-player format, as it eliminated downtime and created constant tension—players must remain engaged throughout, always aware of their opponent's progress and strategic pivots.
Since its release, Quest for El Dorado has become a staple in the modern board game community, winning multiple awards and spawning expansions that extend the game's replayability. Its success demonstrated that deck-building mechanics could shine in racing formats, inspiring subsequent games to explore similar hybrid designs. For 2-player gaming specifically, the title represents an ideal balance between quick playtime and meaningful strategic decisions, making it a benchmark for competitive card-driven board games that reward both tactical acumen and adaptability.
