About This Game

An asymmetric superhero dice battle game. Build custom dice by adding faces, then roll to attack, defend, and use special powers in comic book combat.

How to Play

SETUP: Each player receives a custom dice-building kit and selects their superhero character. Players then customize their dice by adding faces with different abilities: Attack, Defense, Special Power, and Wild sides. Place both players' health trackers at 20 points. Determine turn order randomly.

GAMEPLAY: On your turn, follow these steps in order:

  1. ROLL YOUR DICE: Roll all your customized dice simultaneously.
  2. ALLOCATE RESULTS: Assign each die result to one of three actions: Attack (damage opponent), Defense (reduce incoming damage), or activate a Special Power (unique to your hero).
  3. RESOLVE EFFECTS: Apply your chosen effects immediately. Attack results deal damage equal to the number shown. Defense results reduce the next incoming damage by that amount (can stack).
  4. SPECIAL POWERS: If you rolled Special Power faces, activate your hero's unique ability—these range from bonus damage to healing to dice modification.
  5. END TURN: Pass play to your opponent. Unspent Defense does not carry over between turns.

ATTACK AND DEFENSE: When you attack, your opponent can immediately use Defense results from their last roll to reduce damage taken. If they have no Defense remaining, they lose health equal to your Attack total.

WINCONDITION: The first player to reduce their opponent's health to 0 wins immediately. If both players reach 0 simultaneously, the game ends in a draw.

VARIATIONS FOR 2-PLAYER: KAPOW! is optimized for two-player competitive play. The asymmetric hero powers ensure each matchup feels fresh and strategically distinct. Players can agree to a best-of-three format for extended play.

History & Background

KAPOW! emerged from the creative vision of designer Marcus Chen in 2019, who sought to capture the dynamic, unpredictable nature of superhero combat in tabletop form. Inspired by both classic comic book storytelling and modern asymmetric board game design, Chen developed the custom dice-building mechanic as a way to give each player genuine agency in creating their hero's combat identity. The game's emphasis on asymmetric powers—where each superhero has fundamentally different abilities—set it apart from traditional dice-rolling combat systems and appealed to players seeking fresh strategic experiences in competitive two-player games.

Since its initial release, KAPOW! has gained a devoted following within the tabletop gaming community, particularly among players who appreciate the balance of luck and strategy inherent in dice-based systems. The game's accessibility—with a complexity rating of just 2/5—made superhero-themed gaming approachable for newcomers while the asymmetric hero design kept experienced players engaged through endless tactical variations. Gaming publications praised its elegant resolution system, where Attack, Defense, and Special Power allocations create meaningful decision points each turn, avoiding the common pitfall of "roll and resolve" mechanics that leave players feeling powerless.

The 30-45 minute playtime proved ideal for the two-player competitive format, making KAPOW! a staple for gaming couples and casual gaming groups seeking quick, satisfying battles. Over subsequent years, the game spawned multiple hero expansions and tournament scenes, cementing its place as a cornerstone title for anyone seeking engaging asymmetric dueling experiences. Its influence on the broader tabletop market demonstrated growing player appetite for games that prioritize direct competition and meaningful customization over cooperative mechanics.
