What You'll Need
About This Game
The flagship of the GIPF Project series. Push pieces onto the board, form rows to capture.
How to Play
- Each player starts with 3 GIPF pieces (marked) and 12 basic pieces in reserve
- On your turn, push a piece onto the board from any edge point
- This slides all pieces in that line inward by one space
- When 4+ pieces of your color form a line, remove them (return to reserve)
- You may also capture adjacent opponent pieces in the same line removal
- GIPF pieces can optionally be kept on the board instead of removed
- You lose if: you run out of pieces to place, OR you lose all your GIPF pieces
- Strategy: manage your reserve while forcing your opponent to deplete theirs
History & Background
GIPF was created in 1996 by Belgian game designer Kris Burm, establishing itself as a groundbreaking abstract strategy game that would anchor the GIPF Project series. Burm's innovative design introduced a push-and-capture mechanic that distinguished GIPF from traditional board games, emphasizing tactical placement and strategic resource management rather than complex rules. The game's elegant simplicity masked profound strategic depth, immediately attracting serious board game enthusiasts and competitive players worldwide.
The cultural significance of GIPF lies in its role as a gateway to modern abstract gaming. While abstract board games had existed for centuries, GIPF proved that new designs could compete with classics like Chess and Go by offering fresh strategic challenges without excessive complexity. The game became particularly influential in European board game culture during the late 1990s and 2000s, spawning numerous fan communities and competitive tournaments. Its success validated Burr's broader vision for the GIPF Project, a series of interconnected abstract games sharing compatible rulesets and pieces.
Over time, GIPF has evolved within competitive gaming circles, with players developing increasingly sophisticated strategies around piece economy and board positioning. The game has been featured in abstract game championships and maintains a dedicated following among strategy game aficionados. Despite being nearly three decades old, GIPF continues to attract new players seeking intellectually stimulating two-player competition. Its enduring popularity demonstrates that excellent game design transcends trends, and its influence can be seen in countless modern abstract strategy games that prioritize elegant mechanics and meaningful decision-making over theme-based gameplay.
