History & Background
Forbidden Desert was designed by Matt Leacock and released by Gamewright in 2013, following the massive success of his earlier cooperative game Forbidden Island. Leacock sought to create a sequel that maintained the elegant simplicity of its predecessor while introducing fresh mechanics and increased strategic depth. The game drew inspiration from adventure films and survival narratives, channeling the tension of desert expeditions where players must work together against mounting odds. Forbidden Desert's theme of uncovering hidden ship parts in a storm-ravaged wasteland proved immediately compelling to both casual and experienced board gamers.
The game's core innovation lies in its deduction-based excavation system, where players must combine clues to triangulate the locations of ship parts rather than simply finding them through luck. This mechanic elevated cooperative gameplay beyond simple dice rolling, requiring genuine teamwork and communication. The shifting sand mechanism creates dynamic tension, as the board constantly transforms and becomes increasingly hostile. Forbidden Desert also introduced role-based asymmetric abilities, giving each player unique powers that encourage specialization and interdependence—a design choice that became influential in modern cooperative board games.
Since its release, Forbidden Desert has become a staple in the cooperative gaming community, earning multiple award nominations and a devoted following. Its perfect balance of accessibility and challenge makes it ideal for introducing new players to cooperative mechanics while remaining engaging for veterans. The game's 30-60 minute playtime and moderate complexity (2/5) position it as an excellent gateway game that doesn't demand extensive rulebook study. For two-player groups specifically, Forbidden Desert shines by forcing tight cooperation and shared resource management, making every decision consequential and every victory genuinely earned through collaborative problem-solving.
