About This Game
Stack pieces to capture, but stay connected to the red DVONN pieces or be eliminated.
How to Play
- Phase 1 (Placement): Alternate placing pieces on the board until all 49 spaces are filled
- 3 red DVONN pieces are placed first, then players alternate their color
- Phase 2 (Movement): Move stacks in a straight line, distance equal to stack height
- A stack is controlled by whoever's piece is on top
- You must land on another stack (no empty spaces)
- Any stack not connected to a red DVONN piece is removed from the board
- If you can't move, you pass; if both pass, game ends
- Count pieces in stacks you control — most pieces wins
History & Background
DVONN was created in 2000 by renowned Belgian game designer Kris Burm as part of his abstract strategy series known as "The Gipf Project." Burm, who studied mathematics and computer science, was fascinated by elegant game mechanics that emerge from simple rules, and DVONN exemplifies this philosophy perfectly. The game's name derives from the Russian word "dvoyny," meaning "double" or "dual," reflecting the game's core mechanic of stacking pieces and the dual nature of the strategic challenge—both controlling territory and maintaining connectivity.
What makes DVONN particularly significant in the modern board game renaissance is how it redefined what an abstract strategy game could be. Unlike chess or checkers, which have centuries of tradition, DVONN introduced an innovative connectivity mechanic that wasn't widely explored in competitive board games before its release. The requirement that all pieces must remain connected to the red DVONN pieces creates a dynamic tension between expansion and survival, making each game unpredictable and engaging for both casual and serious players.
Since its launch, DVONN has earned respect among competitive board gamers and puzzle enthusiasts for its perfect information gameplay and surprising depth. It won the prestigious Mensa Select Award in 2001, validating Burm's design philosophy and introducing the game to a broader audience. The game has maintained a dedicated following in the abstract strategy community, particularly among players seeking quick, intellectually challenging two-player competitions. Its 20-30 minute playtime combined with high replay value makes it ideal for dedicated gaming pairs who appreciate elegant mechanics over luck-based gameplay, cementing DVONN's position as a modern classic in abstract board gaming.
