What You'll Need
About This Game
Place building pieces on a walled city board. Block your opponent's larger pieces.
How to Play
- One player places the Cathedral piece in the center area of the 10x10 board
- Then alternate placing building pieces (your color) on the board
- Pieces must fit flat within the grid and not overlap other pieces
- When your pieces and/or the board edges completely enclose an area, you claim that territory
- Opponent's pieces inside claimed territory are removed (returned to their supply)
- You cannot place pieces inside opponent's claimed territory
- Continue until neither player can place a piece
- Score: add up the squares of your unplaced pieces — lowest total wins
History & Background
Cathedral emerged in the 1980s as a minimalist design masterpiece, created by designer Karl-Heinz Schmiel. The game represents an important evolution in abstract board game design—stripping away unnecessary complexity to reveal pure strategic gameplay. Its 10x10 grid and simple piece-placement mechanics were revolutionary for demonstrating that depth of play didn't require complicated rules or lengthy rulebooks.
The game's title references its central mechanic: the Cathedral piece serves as the neutral anchor around which all territorial battles unfold, much like an actual cathedral would anchor a medieval city's development. This thematic elegance—where mechanics and theme intertwine seamlessly—helped Cathedral gain cult status among serious board gamers and abstract game enthusiasts.
Cathedral's design philosophy influenced numerous subsequent games that valued accessibility with hidden complexity. Its scoring system, where unplaced pieces count against you, creates a unique tension: players must balance aggressive territory control with piece efficiency. The game has remained largely unchanged since publication, a testament to its well-calibrated design. Today, Cathedral remains a favorite among players seeking quick, brain-burning duels that reward spatial reasoning and long-term planning, proving that elegantly simple rulesets can deliver sophisticated strategic experiences.
