History & Background

Yardzee is the outdoor evolution of Yahtzee, the classic dice game created by Canadian couple Edwin S. Lowe and his wife in 1956. Originally called "Yatzie," the game was inspired by an earlier dice game and became a household staple after Lowe refined it and sold it to Parker Brothers. Yahtzee's simple yet strategic gameplay made it one of the most successful dice games of all time, selling millions of copies worldwide. The game's elegant combination of luck and decision-making has kept it relevant for nearly seven decades, spawning countless variations and digital adaptations.

The transition from tabletop to lawn came as part of a broader trend in the early 2000s of scaling up classic games for outdoor entertainment and parties. Yardzee emerged as a natural progression, transforming the intimate living room experience into a social outdoor event. By using giant wooden dice—often 12 inches or larger—the game became more visually engaging and easier to play in yard settings where smaller components would be impractical. This oversized approach appealed to casual players and families seeking entertaining alternatives to traditional lawn games like cornhole and horseshoes.

Today, Yardzee occupies a unique space in the lawn games market, bridging the gap between classic tabletop gaming and outdoor recreation. Two-player versions particularly benefit from the game's portable nature and quick 20-30 minute playtime, making it ideal for backyard competitions and casual entertainment. The game's retention of Yahtzee's core mechanics ensures that players familiar with the original can immediately enjoy the outdoor experience, while the tactile satisfaction of rolling massive dice adds a fresh dimension to a timeless game.
