About This Game

Chip golf balls at velcro targets. Points for accuracy. Golf skills in your backyard.

How to Play

SETUP: Place the velcro target set on a flat outdoor surface (lawn, patio, or driveway) approximately 10-15 feet away from a designated hitting area. Mark a clear tee line where both players will stand. Divide the targets into point zones (center = 10 points, middle ring = 5 points, outer ring = 1 point). Each player receives 5 practice balls per round.

GAMEPLAY: Players alternate turns, taking one shot at a time from the tee line using their golf clubs to chip balls toward the target set. After each shot, the player retrieves their ball and records their points based on where it stuck to the velcro target. If a ball misses all targets, zero points are awarded. Players may aim for the same or different target zones during their turn.

SCORING: After each player completes their 5 shots, tally individual scores. Record the points earned from accurate hits on velcro targets. Multiple balls can stick to the same target zone without penalty.

WINNING CONDITIONS: Play continues for an agreed number of rounds (typically 3-5 rounds, depending on time available). The player with the highest cumulative score after all rounds wins. Alternatively, set a target score (e.g., first to 75 points wins) and play continues until someone reaches it.

TWO-PLAYER ADAPTATION: Target Golf is naturally designed for 1v1 competition. The alternating turn structure keeps both players engaged and allows for direct score comparison. Players can increase difficulty by moving the tee line back or targeting specific velcro zones to create mini-challenges within rounds.

OPTIONAL RULES: Introduce "power shots" where one designated shot per round grants double points if successful. Create themed rounds where players must alternate between different target zones each turn, or establish a "closest to target" tiebreaker if scores are tied after final rounds.

History & Background

Target Golf emerged in the early 2000s as a modern backyard adaptation of traditional golf, designed to make the sport more accessible to casual players without requiring extensive property or expensive equipment. The invention of velcro-based target systems revolutionized lawn games by combining the fundamental skills of golf—precision chipping and aim—with the instant feedback and safe play environment that velcro technology provided. Unlike full-scale golf courses, Target Golf could be set up in minutes on any flat outdoor surface, democratizing golf practice for families and competitive friends.

The game gained particular momentum during the 2010s as the backyard gaming renaissance took hold, with parents seeking engaging activities that could be enjoyed in limited spaces. Target Golf's appeal lay in its balance: simple enough for beginners to enjoy immediately, yet skill-based enough to reward practice and technique. The two-player competitive format proved especially popular, as the alternating turn structure created natural tension and direct head-to-head comparison, making every shot matter. Golf enthusiasts embraced it as a practical training tool, while casual players appreciated it as a fun, low-stakes alternative to expensive driving ranges.

Today, Target Golf occupies a unique niche in the lawn games market, bridging the gap between traditional golf and accessible backyard entertainment. Its evolution has included various innovations in velcro target design, portable carrying cases, and customizable difficulty settings. The game represents a broader cultural shift toward accessible sports and outdoor recreation, proving that genuine competitive enjoyment doesn't require professional facilities or extensive time commitments. For two-player competition specifically, Target Golf has become a preferred choice for couples, siblings, and friends seeking quick, satisfying head-to-head matches.
