What You'll Need
About This Game
A quick card-drafting game about collecting sushi. Pick one card, pass the rest, and try to build scoring combinations over three rounds.
How to Play
SETUP: Shuffle the deck and deal 10 cards face-down to each player. Place the remaining cards aside. Each player holds their cards in hand without revealing them to their opponent.
ROUND STRUCTURE: Sushi Go! is played over three rounds. Each round follows the same drafting sequence:
- CARD SELECTION: Simultaneously, both players select one card from their hand and place it face-down on the table in front of them.
- REVEAL: Both players reveal their selected cards at the same time.
- PASS: Each player passes their remaining cards to their opponent. In a 2-player game, you simply swap your remaining cards with your opponent.
- REPEAT: Continue selecting, revealing, and passing until all cards have been played (10 times per round).
SCORING: After each round, players score points based on the cards they've collected:
- Nigiri (egg, salmon, squid): 1, 2, or 3 points respectively
- Maki rolls: Points based on majority (most maki rolls scores 6 points, second most scores 3 points)
- Tempura: Two cards score 5 points; one card scores 0 points
- Sashimi: Three cards score 10 points; fewer than three scores 0 points
- Dumplings: Scoring scales (1 = 1 point, 2 = 3 points, 3 = 6 points, etc.)
- Wasabi: Triples the value of the next nigiri played on it
- Chopsticks: Allows you to play two cards on a future turn
- Dessert: Scored at the end of the entire game
After scoring each round, return all cards to the deck, reshuffle, and begin the next round. The deck is always dealt so each player has 10 cards per round.
WINNING CONDITION: Play all three rounds. The player with the highest total score across all three rounds wins. In case of a tie, the player with the highest dessert score breaks the tie.
NOTE: Sushi Go! traditionally supports 2-5 players. The 2-player adaptation uses the standard rules without modification—passing cards to your opponent creates interesting strategic decisions since you know you'll receive back the cards you pass.
History & Background
Sushi Go! was designed by Phil Walker-Harding and first published by Gamewright in 2009, quickly becoming one of the most acclaimed modern card games. The game's elegant design captures the essence of the card drafting mechanic—a concept borrowed from Magic: The Gathering's limited formats—but simplifies it into an accessible experience for players of all ages. Walker-Harding's genius lay in creating a game that felt strategically deep despite its straightforward rules, making it perfect for both casual family gaming and competitive play.
The game's Japanese sushi theme resonates culturally as it transforms a beloved cuisine into engaging gameplay. Each card type mirrors real sushi varieties, creating an intuitive learning curve where players instantly understand what egg nigiri, salmon rolls, and wasabi represent. This thematic coherence helped Sushi Go! win numerous awards, including the Golden Geek Award, and establish itself as a gateway game that introduces newcomers to modern board gaming.
In two-player format, Sushi Go! reveals a fascinating dynamic absent in larger player counts. Because you pass cards directly to your opponent and receive theirs back, each decision carries heightened tension—you must consider not only what you need but what strategic advantage you're giving your opponent. This creates a delightful mind game where reading your opponent becomes crucial. Since its 2009 debut, Sushi Go! has spawned expansions and a sequel (Sushi Go Party!), but the original remains beloved for its perfect balance of simplicity and strategy, proving that great game design transcends player count.
