About This Game

The foundation for many card games, Rummy involves drawing and discarding cards to form melds of sets and runs. Simple rules make it accessible while strategy keeps it interesting.

How to Play

**Objective:** Be the first to empty your hand by forming valid sets and runs.

**Valid Combinations:** Set = 3-4 cards of same rank; Run = 3+ consecutive cards of same suit.

**On Your Turn:**

  1. Draw from pile or take top discard
  2. Meld (optional): lay down complete sets/runs
  3. Lay Off (optional): add to existing melds
  4. Discard one card (required)

**Going Out:** Meld all cards, then discard final card. "Going Rummy" (all at once) doubles the score.

**Scoring:** Winner scores opponent's unmelded cards: face cards=10, Aces=1, others=face value. First to 100 wins.

History & Background

Rummy's origins trace back to early 20th-century Mexico, where it evolved from the Mexican game Conquian, a card game combining elements of both draw-and-discard mechanics and meld-formation. The game quickly spread throughout North America and became a staple in American households by the 1930s, eventually developing numerous regional variations. Its accessibility and strategic depth made it perfect for casual play, and it gained particular popularity during the Great Depression when affordable entertainment became essential.

The game's cultural significance grew throughout the decades, becoming the foundation for numerous derivative card games that are still played today, including Gin Rummy—a faster, more competitive two-player variant that became hugely popular in the mid-20th century. Rummy has remained remarkably resilient, adapting across generations from living room tables to competitive tournaments. Its elegant simplicity and the balance between chance and skill have ensured its place in game history, influencing countless modern card games while maintaining its core appeal as a timeless two-player duel that rewards both tactical thinking and careful observation of opponent patterns.
