About This Game

A card game where every card is both a vegetable and a scoring rule. Draft wisely to build the highest-scoring salad while denying opponents their goals.

How to Play

SETUP: Shuffle all cards and deal 2 cards face-up to each player. Place the remaining deck in the center as the draw pile.

GAMEPLAY: On your turn, take one of these actions:

  1. DRAFT: Take one of the 2 face-up cards in front of you and add it to your hand.
  2. DRAW: Draw the top card from the deck and add it to your hand.

After you take an action, refill the face-up cards so there are always 2 cards visible to each player. If the deck runs out, shuffle the discard pile to create a new deck.

Continue taking turns until all cards have been drafted or drawn.

SCORING: Each card serves dual purposes—it's both a vegetable (like lettuce, carrot, or tomato) and a scoring rule. When the game ends, total your score by:

  1. Count how many of each vegetable type you have.
  2. Apply the scoring rules on each card you collected. Rules typically award points based on vegetable quantities (e.g., "Score 3 points per carrot you have" or "Score points based on your lowest vegetable count").
  3. Some cards may have negative scoring conditions, so draft strategically to maximize your vegetables while minimizing opponents' scoring opportunities.

WINNING: The player with the highest total score wins. Point Salad is traditionally designed for 3-4 players, but works excellently with 2 players by creating more aggressive card denial and strategic depth. With fewer players, each card choice has greater impact on your opponent's options, making every draft decision crucial.

TIP: Pay attention to which scoring rules are available. If your opponent is collecting carrots, consider taking carrot cards to deny them points, even if they don't benefit your own salad.

History & Background

Point Salad was designed by Chip Beall and published by AEG (Alderac Entertainment Group) in 2019, quickly becoming a favorite for casual game nights due to its elegant simplicity and surprising strategic depth. The game's brilliance lies in its dual-purpose card mechanic, where vegetables and scoring conditions are unified on single cards, creating constant tension between what helps you and what denies your opponent.

The game emerged during a golden age of accessible card games designed for mainstream audiences. While not based on traditional games, Point Salad drew inspiration from the success of other quick drafting games like Sushi Go! and 7 Wonders, but stripped the experience down to its essential competitive core. The vegetable theme was deliberately whimsical and approachable, making the game feel light-hearted despite its competitive nature.

Point Salad gained significant cultural traction in the board game community, becoming a staple recommendation for two-player gaming and casual family play. Its success spawned Point Salad: Seasons, an expansion that adds thematic seasonal variations and new scoring opportunities. The game has been praised by reviewers for being a perfect "filler game"—engaging enough for experienced gamers but simple enough for newcomers. Its continued popularity in both casual and competitive circles demonstrates how clever card design and accessible gameplay can create an enduring modern classic.
