What You'll Need
About This Game
Checkers with oversized pieces on a lawn board. Jump your way to victory.
How to Play
SETUP: Place the lawn checkers board on a flat outdoor surface with one player on each side. Each player receives 12 oversized checkers pieces in their designated color and arranges them on the three rows closest to them, one piece per dark square. The player with the darker colored pieces moves first.
GAMEPLAY: Players alternate turns moving one piece at a time. Regular pieces move diagonally forward one square to an adjacent empty dark square. To capture an opponent's piece, jump diagonally over it to an empty square directly beyond it—the jumped piece is removed from the board. Multiple jumps are allowed and encouraged in a single turn if available; a player must continue jumping if additional captures are possible. When a piece reaches the opponent's back row, it is crowned (often by stacking pieces or marking it) and becomes a king. Kings can move and jump diagonally both forward and backward, giving them greater mobility.
WINNING CONDITIONS: A player wins by either capturing all of their opponent's pieces or blocking all remaining opponent pieces so no legal moves are available. If neither player can force a win, the game may be declared a draw after both players agree no progress can be made.
2-PLAYER ADAPTATION: Lawn Checkers is traditionally a 2-player game, so no adaptation is necessary. The oversized outdoor format makes the classic game more social and engaging for two competitors in a lawn or garden setting.
History & Background
Checkers evolved from the 12th-century game Alquerque, which was played on an 8×8 board in the Middle East. When Alquerque was adapted to use a chess board around 1100 AD in Southern France, the modern game of Checkers (known as Draughts in many countries) was born. The straightforward rules and quick gameplay made it one of the most accessible strategy games in history, rivaling chess in popularity among casual players.
Throughout the centuries, Checkers became a beloved pastime across cultures, from European parlors to American front porches. The game's elegant simplicity—simple enough for children to learn in minutes, yet deep enough for lifelong strategic mastery—ensured its survival and evolution. Professional Checkers tournaments emerged in the 1800s, and the game gained intellectual prestige when computers began competing against champions in the late 20th century.
Lawn Checkers represents a modern twist on this ancient game, bringing the classic 2-player experience outdoors with oversized pieces. This large-scale format has gained popularity at parks, gardens, and recreational spaces, making the strategic depth of traditional Checkers more social and physically engaging. By scaling up the pieces and board, Lawn Checkers transforms a quiet tabletop game into an interactive outdoor event, making it perfect for casual competitions between friends and family while maintaining the timeless strategic elements that have entertained players for nearly a millennium.
