How to Play

- Highest total score wins
- Simple to learn, surprisingly deep
History & Background
Kingdomino was designed by Bruno Cathala and first published by Blue Orange Games in 2016, quickly becoming a modern classic in the board game world. The game takes inspiration from dominoes—a centuries-old game mechanic—but translates it into a spatial puzzle about kingdom building and area majority. Cathala's design brilliance lies in its elegant simplicity: the drafting system creates meaningful tension as players must balance immediate tile quality against turn order advantage, a mechanic that rewards strategic thinking without overwhelming new players.
The game achieved remarkable success, winning the Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) in 2017—one of the most prestigious awards in tabletop gaming. This recognition catapulted Kingdomino into mainstream consciousness and established it as a gateway game that bridges casual and experienced players. For two-player specifically, the head-to-head dynamic transforms the drafting into psychological warfare: watching your opponent's kingdom grow while calculating your own grid placement creates compelling, tense moments. The game has spawned expansions like Kingdomino: Age of Giants, but the original remains the purest expression of its design philosophy, proving that minimalist rulesets can generate surprising depth.
