What You'll Need
About This Game
Fantasy-themed deck builder. Attack your opponent while building your deck.
How to Play
SETUP: Each player receives a starting deck of 10 cards (basic cards and a hero card) and shuffles it. Place your deck face-down in front of you. Draw 5 cards for your opening hand. Set your life total to 50 and place it where both players can see it. Separate the Market deck and arrange Market cards face-up in a row between players.
GAMEPLAY: On your turn, follow these steps in order:
- Play Cards: Play any cards from your hand in any order. Cards typically provide gold (to buy new cards), attack (to damage opponent), or special abilities.
- Buy Phase: Use your gold to purchase cards from the Market, adding them to your discard pile.
- Attack: Use your attack total to deal damage to your opponent's life total.
- End Turn: Discard all remaining cards in your hand. Draw 5 new cards from your deck. If your deck runs out, shuffle your discard pile to form a new deck.
KEY MECHANICS: Cards remain in the Market until purchased. As you build your deck, you'll acquire more powerful cards with better attack and gold values. Certain cards provide instant effects or ongoing abilities. Some cards can be "Leveled Up" by purchasing duplicate cards, making them more powerful.
WINNING: The first player to reduce their opponent's life total to 0 or below wins immediately. The 2-player format uses the standard rules without modification—Hero Realms was designed for 2-4 players with the same core mechanics applying to all player counts.
GAME LENGTH: Most 2-player games conclude in 20-30 minutes once both players understand the card abilities and strategies.
History & Background
Hero Realms emerged in 2016 as the fantasy-themed successor to the popular sci-fi deck-building game Star Realms, created by Robert Dougherty and Darwin Kastle. While Star Realms captured audiences with its space exploration theme, the designers recognized an opportunity to reach fantasy enthusiasts with a familiar medieval setting featuring wizards, warriors, and magical artifacts. This thematic pivot proved successful, establishing Hero Realms as a standalone title that could compete alongside its predecessor in the competitive deck-building market.
The game's design philosophy centered on fast-paced gameplay and strategic depth wrapped in an accessible package. By maintaining a 20-30 minute playtime, Hero Realms positioned itself as an ideal entry point for players new to deck-building mechanics, while the level-up system and card synergies provided enough complexity to satisfy experienced gamers. The 2-player format became particularly popular in competitive settings, with players appreciating the direct player-versus-player interaction that forces immediate tactical decisions rather than lengthy multiplayer negotiations.
Since its release, Hero Realms has spawned numerous expansions including campaign modes, cooperative scenarios, and specialized card sets that transform the base game into various subgenres. This evolution demonstrated the game's versatility and strong foundation. The fantasy theme resonated strongly with tabletop gaming communities, securing Hero Realms' position as a modern classic in the deck-building genre. Today, it remains a staple recommendation for two players seeking quick, engaging card games that balance luck and strategy, proving that sometimes the best innovations come from reimagining proven formulas in fresh thematic settings.
