How to Play

**Setup:** Use 40-card Spanish deck (or standard deck without 8, 9, 10). Deal 3 cards each. Place 4 cards face-up on table.

**Gameplay:**

  1. Play one card to capture table cards summing to your card's value (A=1, J=8, Q=9, K=10)
  2. You can take multiple combinations adding to your card's value
  3. Capturing ALL table cards is an "Escoba" (sweep) - worth 1 point
  4. If no capture, your card joins the table
  5. When hands empty, deal 3 more each until deck is gone

**Scoring (Primiera):**

  • Most cards: 1 point
  • Most diamonds (oros): 1 point
  • 7 of diamonds: 1 point
  • Most sevens (or highest primiera): 1 point
  • Each escoba: 1 point

**Winning:** First to 11 or 21 points.

History & Background

Escoba, meaning "broom" or "sweep" in Spanish, is the Spanish variant of the Italian card game Scopa, which dates back to at least the 15th century. The game evolved as trade routes connected Southern Europe, with the capturing mechanic and point system becoming refined over centuries of play in Spanish-speaking regions. By the 17th and 18th centuries, Escoba had become deeply embedded in Spanish and Latin American culture, played in homes, taverns, and plazas from Madrid to Mexico City. The game's accessibility—requiring only a standard deck and basic arithmetic—made it a perfect vehicle for cultural transmission across social classes and geographic boundaries.

What distinguishes Escoba from its Italian predecessor is the emphasis on the dramatic "sweep" (escoba)—the moment when a player captures every card on the table. This mechanic creates exciting tension in two-player games, as opponents watch carefully to prevent or execute sweeps. The primiera scoring system, which awards points for card combinations and specific valuable cards like the seven of diamonds, adds strategic depth beyond simple capturing. This combination of luck and tactical decision-making has ensured the game's survival and popularity.

Today, Escoba remains a cherished tradition throughout Spain and Latin America, passed down through families and played competitively in tournaments. In the digital age, the game has found new audiences through online platforms, though traditionalists still prefer the tactile experience of physical cards. For two players, Escoba offers the perfect balance of quick gameplay and meaningful choices, making it ideal for casual entertainment or serious competition. Its enduring popularity demonstrates how simple card games can transcend centuries and borders through cultural resonance and engaging gameplay.
