What You'll Need
About This Game
A collectible card game featuring Disney characters across all eras. Play characters, use their abilities, and quest for lore to win.
How to Play
SETUP: Each player begins with 20 lore counters (representing their lore total). Shuffle your deck of 60 cards and draw 7 cards as your opening hand. You may mulligan once by shuffling your hand back and drawing 7 new cards. Place your deck face-down in front of you as your draw pile.
GAMEPLAY: Players alternate turns. On your turn: (1) Draw one card from your deck. (2) Play cards from your hand—you may play one character card per turn, paying its ink cost from your ink pool. You start each turn with 1 ink available; ink refreshes fully at the start of your next turn. (3) Activate abilities on your characters in play, following the text on each card. (4) Quest with your characters—assign any number of your characters to quest. Each character quests for a number of lore equal to its lore value. Questing characters become exerted (tapped) and deal their damage value to opposing characters. (5) End your turn by refreshing all your exerted cards.
COMBAT: When characters quest into an opponent's characters, opposing characters may be exerted to block. If a character takes damage equal to or greater than its willpower, it is knocked out and sent to the discard pile.
LORE GENERATION: When your characters quest successfully (aren't blocked or survive blocking), you gain lore equal to their lore value. Add this lore to your lore counter.
WINNING: The first player to accumulate 20 lore wins the game. This represents mastering the lore of Disney's magical worlds.
KEY MECHANICS: Ink is your resource—manage it carefully to play powerful characters. Questing is your primary way to gain lore and damage opponents. Each character has unique abilities that combo together. The game plays identically with 2 players as it does with 4, making it perfectly balanced for head-to-head competition.
History & Background
Disney Lorcana launched in 2023 as Ravensburger's ambitious entry into the collectible card game market, marking Disney's official foray into competitive card gaming. The game was developed in collaboration with experienced CCG designers who sought to create an accessible yet strategically deep experience that could appeal to both longtime Disney fans and seasoned card game enthusiasts. The name "Lorcana" itself references the magical concept of lore—the accumulated knowledge and stories of Disney's vast universe spanning nearly a century of animation, live-action films, and beloved characters.
The game quickly gained cultural significance as it successfully bridged two previously separate communities: Disney collectors and competitive gamers. By featuring characters from across Disney's entire portfolio—from classic Mickey Mouse to modern Marvel and Star Wars properties—Lorcana created a unique collecting experience that resonated with fans of all ages. The card illustrations themselves became sought-after art pieces, with acclaimed artists bringing Disney characters to life in fresh, game-appropriate designs. Two-player formats became the game's cornerstone, with head-to-head duels offering intimate, tactically engaging gameplay that didn't require large player groups.
Since its launch, Lorcana has evolved through multiple card sets and expansions, each introducing new characters, mechanics, and strategic possibilities. The game's elegant design—where a single ink resource and straightforward questing system create surprising depth—has proven remarkably balanced for competitive play. Its accessibility (rated 2/5 complexity) has made it an ideal gateway game for introducing newcomers to card gaming, while its strategic card interactions and deck-building decisions satisfy experienced players. Today, Disney Lorcana stands as a testament to how beloved intellectual property can create compelling competitive gaming experiences when thoughtfully designed.
