About This Game

A classic dexterity game played on a round wooden board. Flick discs to score points in the center while knocking opponents' pieces away.

How to Play

  1. Each player has 12 discs of their color
  2. Flick one disc at a time from your edge of the round board
  3. If opponent's discs are on the board, you MUST hit at least one
  4. If no opponent's discs, your disc must end in the center or inner region
  5. Discs that don't meet requirements are removed
  6. Center hole: disc that stays in the hole scores 20 points (set aside)
  7. After all discs are played, score by region:
  • Inner circle: 15, Middle: 10, Outer: 5
  1. Subtract lower score from higher — difference = round points for the winner
  2. First to 100 points wins the match
  3. A game of precision flicking and defensive positioning

History & Background

Crokinole originated in 19th-century Ontario, Canada, with its invention attributed to Eckhardt Wettlaufer, a woodworker who created the first board around 1876. The game quickly gained popularity across North America and eventually spread worldwide, becoming a beloved classic in living rooms and game cafés. Its simple yet elegant design—a round wooden board with concentric circles and a central hole—reflects the craftsmanship of its era and has remained largely unchanged for over 140 years.

The game's appeal lies in its perfect balance of accessibility and skill. Unlike complex board games requiring extensive rules, Crokinole can be learned in minutes but mastered over a lifetime. It has earned recognition as one of the finest dexterity games ever created, frequently compared to shuffleboard and other flicking games. Crokinole boards became status symbols in Canadian households and remain prized possessions, with handcrafted boards becoming collector's items.

Today, Crokinole experiences renewed interest among modern board gamers who appreciate its analog, screen-free gameplay and the satisfying physicality of flicking discs. The game's competitive yet social nature makes it ideal for two-player matches, where head-to-head strategy and defensive positioning create engaging moments. Competitive tournaments still thrive globally, while new players discover the game's timeless charm each year.
