What You'll Need
About This Game
Third in the Clever series. New scoring sheets and mechanics for combo lovers.
How to Play
SETUP: Each player receives an identical scoring sheet and a pen. Place the six dice in the center where both players can reach them. Determine who goes first.
GAMEPLAY: On your turn, roll all six dice and immediately set aside any dice you want to use for your current scoring attempt. You must use at least one die per turn. After setting aside dice, you have two choices: (1) Roll the remaining dice to try and build more combos, or (2) Stop and score your current selection.
If you roll and cannot or choose not to use any of the new dice shown, your turn ends and you score nothing for that round. This risk-reward tension defines each decision.
SCORING: Write numbers from your dice into the colored sections on your sheet according to the scoring rules specific to each section. The genius of Clever Cubed lies in its combo mechanics—certain number combinations unlock bonuses and chain reactions that multiply your points. Some sections reward sequences, others reward matches, and some unlock special powers when completed.
Each scoring section can only be used once per game, so positioning your dice strategically across sections becomes crucial. When you complete a section with a combo bonus, you immediately score additional points and may trigger cascading rewards.
WINNING: The game lasts multiple rounds (typically 9-12 turns per player depending on sheet design). After all players have completed their scoring sheets, total your points. The player with the highest score wins.
2-PLAYER ADAPTATION: Unlike traditional Clever Cubed which supports 1-4 players with simultaneous turns, the 2-player version works perfectly with alternating turns. This creates engaging tension as you watch your opponent's scoring opportunities and adjust your strategy accordingly. The competitive nature intensifies since you're directly competing for high scores, and the shared dice pool means you must sometimes take risks to prevent your opponent from accessing optimal dice combinations.
History & Background
Clever Cubed is the third installment in the acclaimed Clever dice game series, developed by Reinhard Staupe and published by NSV (Nürnberger-Spielkartenverlag). The Clever series emerged from the designer's vision to create quick, accessible dice games that combined simple rules with surprising strategic depth. The original Kniffel-style gameplay was reimagined to emphasize real-time decision-making and combo mechanics rather than traditional luck-based scoring, establishing a new standard for modern dice gaming.
The series gained international recognition starting with the first Clever game, which introduced the innovative concept of simultaneous play where players race through identical scoring sheets. This revolutionary approach transformed casual dice gaming into a brain-burning puzzle experience that appealed to both families and competitive players. Clever Cubed takes this foundation further by introducing more intricate combo systems and cascading reward mechanics that reward careful planning and risk assessment. The game's focus on combo chains and strategic positioning represents an evolution in the series' design philosophy, appealing particularly to players who enjoy optimizing complex scoring patterns.
In 2-player competitive format, Clever Cubed gains an additional layer of tension absent from the series' multiplayer iterations. The alternating turn structure and shared dice pool create genuine head-to-head competition where denying your opponent optimal dice combinations becomes as important as securing your own scoring opportunities. This adaptation has made Clever Cubed a standout title in the modern dice game renaissance, proving that light push-your-luck mechanics combined with deep combo systems can create engaging competitive experiences. The game exemplifies how elegant design and accessible rules can deliver substantial strategic gameplay in under 30 minutes.
