What You'll Need
About This Game
Generic name for dice games. Roll to collect sets, like collecting bones. Many variants.
How to Play
What You Need
- 5 standard six-sided dice
- Paper and pen for scoring
Setup
- Agree on a target score before starting (common targets: 1,000 or 5,000 points)
- Each player rolls one die — highest roll goes first
- Play proceeds clockwise
Gameplay
- On your turn, roll all 5 dice
- Set aside at least one scoring die — you must keep something each roll
- Roll the remaining dice
- Continue setting aside scoring dice and rerolling the rest
- You may stop at any time and bank your accumulated score for the turn
- If a roll produces no scoring dice, you "bust" — lose all points from that turn
Scoring
- Single 1 = 100 points
- Single 5 = 50 points
- Three 1s = 1,000 points
- Three of a kind (any other number) = face value × 100 (e.g., three 4s = 400 points)
- Four of a kind = face value × 200
- Five of a kind = face value × 400
- Straight (1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6) = 1,500 points
Hot Dice
- If all 5 dice score in a single roll, you get Hot Dice
- Pick up all 5 dice and roll again — your accumulated score carries over
- Hot Dice chains are rare but can produce massive scores
Winning
- First player to reach the agreed target score wins
- Some variants require landing exactly on the target — any bust from an over-score costs your turn
Note

- Common regional names: Farkle, Zilch, Greed, 5000, Ten Thousand
History & Background
Bones represents one of gaming's oldest and most universal traditions—rolling dice to determine fate and fortune. The name itself carries historical weight, referencing the earliest dice games played with actual animal bones and knucklebones (called astragali) in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Rome. These primitive dice were central to entertainment, gambling, and even divination across civilizations for over 5,000 years.
The modern dice-collecting variant of Bones emerged from the simplification and standardization of traditional gambling games during the 20th century. As commercial six-sided dice became ubiquitous, game designers created family-friendly versions of bone-rolling games, emphasizing set collection rather than pure gambling stakes. The scoring system—rewarding three-of-a-kind, four-of-a-kind, and five-of-a-kind combinations—evolved naturally from probability theory and the desire to create meaningful decision-making moments during gameplay.
Today, Bones remains beloved precisely because of its adaptability. With no board, minimal components, and rules that fit on a single page, it thrives in countless regional and house-rule variants worldwide. For two players, the game shines as a pure test of luck balanced with tactical rerolling decisions, making each 10-20 minute session feel like a complete competitive experience. Its enduring popularity demonstrates that sometimes the simplest games—those played since ancient times—remain the most satisfying.
