🎲 Cosmic Wimpout dice

About This Game

Push-your-luck dice with special symbols. Flaming Sun forces rerolls, half-moons are wild.

How to Play

SETUP: Each player starts with 0 points. Decide who goes first.

GAMEPLAY

  1. On your turn, roll all dice in the cup. You must roll at least once per turn.
  2. After rolling, set aside any scoring dice (see Scoring below). You must set aside at least one scoring die to continue your turn.
  3. Decide whether to BANK your points (end your turn safely and add points to your score) or PUSH YOUR LUCK (reroll the remaining dice to score more).
  4. If you push your luck and roll, repeat steps 2-3 with the remaining dice.
  5. FLAMING SUN RULE: If a Flaming Sun appears on any die during your turn, all non-scoring dice are rerolled automatically. You keep only the dice you've already set aside.
  6. If you cannot set aside any scoring dice from a roll, you BUST. Lose all points from this turn only (not your bank) and pass the dice to your opponent.
  7. If you bank your points, add them to your score and pass the dice to your opponent.

SCORING

  • Specific number combinations score points (consult score chart on game materials)
  • Half-moons act as WILD symbols, matching any number you need
  • Flaming Suns cannot be scored; they force rerolls as described above

WINNING CONDITION

First player to reach the target score (typically 10,000 points or as agreed) wins. If both players exceed the target in the same round, highest score wins.

ADAPTATION NOTE: Cosmic Wimpout traditionally supports 2-6 players with identical rules. Two-player games proceed with the same mechanics—simply alternate turns until someone reaches the winning score. Two-player games often play faster and create more intense head-to-head competition.

History & Background

Cosmic Wimpout emerged from the rich tradition of push-your-luck dice games that have captivated players for decades. Developed as a space-themed variation of classic farkle-style games, Cosmic Wimpout introduced innovative mechanics through its distinctive Flaming Sun and half-moon symbols, transforming simple dice rolling into a game of strategic decision-making and calculated risk. The game's cosmic aesthetic resonated with players seeking a fresh take on traditional dice games, blending familiar gameplay with imaginative visual themes that captured the imagination of tabletop enthusiasts throughout the 1980s and beyond.

The introduction of special symbols fundamentally changed how push-your-luck games were played. The Flaming Sun mechanic created genuine tension during turns, forcing players to constantly weigh the danger of rerolls against potential point gains. Meanwhile, half-moons as wild symbols added a layer of strategic depth, allowing skilled players to better manage their risk calculations. These innovations elevated Cosmic Wimpout from a simple chance game to one requiring genuine tactical awareness, making each decision meaningful and memorable.

In two-player settings, Cosmic Wimpout shines as an intensely competitive experience. The head-to-head format amplifies the psychological aspects of push-your-luck gameplay—watching your opponent bank points while you're still rolling creates palpable tension. The 20-30 minute playtime makes it perfect for quick competitive sessions, while the target score system ensures both players remain engaged throughout. Whether casual players seeking straightforward fun or experienced gamers appreciating its elegant mechanics, two-player Cosmic Wimpout delivers the perfect balance of luck and strategy that keeps rivals coming back for one more round.
