About This Game
Sequel to That's Pretty Clever with new scoring areas and deeper combos.
How to Play
SETUP: Each player receives a scoresheet and a pencil. Place the six dice in the center of the play area where both players can reach them. Decide who goes first.
GAMEPLAY: On your turn, roll all six dice and place them in the center where both players can see the results. You then have up to three rounds to select dice and mark numbers on your scoresheet. In each round, you must select at least one die that hasn't been used this turn. Once you select a die, mark the corresponding number in one of your scoring areas on your sheet. You cannot use a die with a lower value than the previous die you selected in that turn. After you mark your selection, all players may mark that same number in their sheets if they choose (this is the key 2-player mechanic—both players benefit from one player's roll). You may stop after any round and pass the dice to your opponent, or continue rolling remaining dice. If you continue, you must select at least one new die, and it must show a value equal to or higher than your previous selection. If you cannot or choose not to continue, your turn ends and your opponent rolls. The game lasts 6 rounds (one full rotation of turns).
SCORING AREAS: Twice as Clever features new colored sections beyond the original game, including multiple pathways to score points through number sequences, color groups, and special bonus combinations. Completed sections grant bonus points. Study your sheet to understand how different areas interact and create combos.
WINNING: After 6 rounds, total all points from completed sections, bonuses, and color groups. The player with the highest score wins. In 2-player mode, the shared die mechanic creates interesting tension—your opponent's good rolls can help you, but you must also capitalize on opportunities quickly before they pass.
History & Background
Twice as Clever is the sequel to That's Pretty Clever (Kniffelblock), a modern dice game that revitalized the classic Yahtzee formula for contemporary board gamers. The original game, designed by Wolfgang Warsch and published in 2018, became an unexpected hit by streamlining traditional dice rolling into a fast-paced, decision-heavy experience that completed in under 30 minutes. Its success demonstrated that dice games could offer surprising strategic depth without lengthy rulebooks or excessive downtime—a revelation that resonated with casual and competitive players alike. The game's elegant simplicity masked genuinely tough choices, earning critical acclaim and numerous award nominations across Europe and North America.
Recognizing the potential for expansion, designer Wolfgang Warsch created Twice as Clever in 2020, building upon the foundation while introducing entirely new scoring mechanisms and combo systems. Rather than simply rehashing the original's formula, the sequel adds layers of interconnected scoring areas that reward planning and interaction, while maintaining the approachable gameplay that made the first game accessible. The 2-player experience particularly benefits from the shared die mechanic—opponents can capitalize on each other's rolls, creating genuine moments of tension where your success might inadvertently help your rival, yet passing up opportunities could prove costly.
Twice as Clever represents the evolution of dice gaming in the modern board game renaissance, proving that sequential releases could genuinely innovate rather than dilute a successful concept. The game appeals to both veterans of dice-rolling games seeking fresh challenges and newcomers attracted by quick playtimes and engaging head-to-head competition. Its design philosophy emphasizes player agency and meaningful decision-making within a compact timeframe, making it a standout title for two-player gaming enthusiasts who appreciate tactical depth without overwhelming complexity.
