What You'll Need
About This Game
A dexterity stacking game where players balance wooden ladders reaching toward the moon. Follow placement requirements or lose points when pieces fall.
How to Play
SETUP: Place the game board between both players. Each player chooses a color and takes their corresponding wooden ladder pieces. Set the moon token at the top of the board. Shuffle the placement requirement cards and create a draw pile. Each player starts with 0 points.
GAMEPLAY: Players alternate turns, starting with the player chosen randomly. On your turn: (1) Draw a placement requirement card that specifies where and how to place a ladder piece on the board. (2) Carefully balance one of your wooden ladder pieces according to the card's requirements—it must touch the specified location and follow stability rules. (3) If your piece is successfully placed and remains balanced, mark the points shown on the card. (4) If any pieces fall during or after placement, all fallen pieces are removed from the board and you lose the points associated with those pieces.
PLACEMENT RULES: Ladders must be positioned to gradually build toward the moon. Pieces can lean against previously placed ladders but must maintain physical balance without toppling. You cannot use your hands to stabilize pieces after placement—they must hold independently.
WINNING CONDITION: The game ends when either all placement cards are drawn or both players agree the structure has become too unstable to continue. The player with the highest total points wins. In case of a tie, the player whose last placed piece is highest on the structure wins.
2-PLAYER ADAPTATION: Catch the Moon traditionally supports 2-4 players. In 2-player mode, the competitive tension is heightened since you're directly competing for points. The smaller player count means turns come more frequently, creating faster-paced gameplay and more dramatic collapses. Some versions allow players to optionally increase difficulty by drawing two requirement cards per turn and choosing which to execute, adding strategic depth to the two-player experience.
History & Background
Catch the Moon emerged from the classic tradition of dexterity games that have challenged players for generations. Inspired by real-world stacking challenges and the timeless appeal of balancing games, the designers at Bezier Games created a modern take on this genre in the early 2020s. The game combines the physical skill requirements of traditional stacking games with the strategic card-driven mechanics of contemporary board gaming, resulting in a unique experience that appeals to both casual players and dexterity game enthusiasts.
The game's thematic centerpiece—building ladders toward the moon—draws from humanity's fascination with space exploration and the poetic imagery of reaching for impossible goals. This clever narrative wraps the mechanical challenge in an engaging story framework, making the precarious tower-building feel purposeful rather than arbitrary. The wooden ladder pieces themselves are thoughtfully designed to present varying difficulty levels depending on their shape and balance point, creating emergent gameplay where each turn becomes increasingly challenging as the structure grows more complex.
In two-player mode, Catch the Moon transforms into an intense head-to-head competition where every turn carries significant weight. The direct rivalry creates memorable moments as players nervously watch opponents place pieces that could either strengthen or destabilize the shared structure. The optional variant allowing players to draw two cards and choose their placement adds strategic depth perfect for competitive duos, elevating the game beyond pure luck into a battle of nerve and spatial reasoning. Since its release, Catch the Moon has gained recognition as an excellent gateway game that introduces new players to dexterity-based gameplay while remaining engaging enough for experienced board gamers seeking quick, adrenaline-fueled sessions.
