What You'll Need
About This Game
Win flags by playing the best 3-card poker hands. Tight tactical card play.
How to Play
SETUP: Shuffle the deck and place it between both players. Each player draws 6 cards into their hand. Lay out 9 flags in a line between players, numbered 1-9 from left to right.
GAMEPLAY: Players alternate turns, starting with the non-dealer player. On your turn, play one card from your hand face-up in front of any unclaimed flag. You may also play a Scutarius card (special card) that modifies tactics. After playing, draw one card from the deck.
CARD VALUES: Cards are numbered 1-10 in six colors/suits. Form poker-style hands: High Card, Pair, Two Pair, Three of a Kind, Straight, Flush, Full House, and Straight Flush (highest). Identical hands are broken by the highest card.
WINNING FLAGS: Once three cards are played in front of a flag by either player, that flag is immediately claimed by whoever has the best poker hand. That player takes the flag token. Flags cannot be reclaimed.
WINNING CONDITION: The game ends when either (1) all 9 flags are claimed, or (2) the deck runs out and all remaining cards are played. The player who has claimed the most flags wins. A player only needs to win 5 flags to win immediately.
TACTICAL NOTES: Players can only see their own cards. Strategic placement of cards creates hand-building opportunities and blocks opponents. The Scutarius cards add bluffing and tactical depth by allowing special actions.
2-PLAYER ADAPTATION: Battle Line is specifically designed for 2-player competition, making it ideal for head-to-head play without modification. The tight spacing and simultaneous hand-building creates intense direct conflict.
History & Background
Battle Line was designed by Reiner Knizia, one of the most prolific and acclaimed board game designers of all time, and published in 2006 by Z-Man Games. Knizia crafted the game as a refined two-player experience that strips away unnecessary complexity while maintaining deep strategic decision-making. The game's elegant design quickly garnered attention from the competitive gaming community, earning a dedicated following among players who appreciated its perfect balance of accessibility and tactical depth.
The game draws inspiration from classical card game traditions, particularly poker hand rankings, but transforms them into a completely unique spatial and tactical experience. Rather than competing for a single pot, players engage in nine simultaneous battles across the flag line, each requiring careful hand management and opponent prediction. This innovative approach to traditional card mechanics proved revolutionary in the two-player card game genre, influencing countless designs that followed.
Battle Line has remained remarkably popular since its release, maintaining consistent print runs and spawning multiple expansions that add new tactical layers without compromising the core gameplay. The game has become a staple in competitive gaming circles and casual board game cafés alike, celebrated for delivering meaningful decisions in just 20-30 minutes. Its influence on modern two-player card design cannot be overstated—it proved that simple rules and elegant mechanisms could create genuinely tense, strategic head-to-head competition. Today, Battle Line stands as a testament to Knizia's design philosophy: that constraint breeds creativity, and that the best games respect players' time while rewarding their strategic thinking.
