What You'll Need
About This Game
Stomp on the launcher to send foam rockets flying. See who can land closest to a target.
How to Play
SETUP: 1. Assemble the Stomp Rocket launcher according to the included instructions, ensuring the air chamber is properly connected to the launch pad. 2. Choose a launching location in an open outdoor space (lawn or field) with at least 30 feet of clear space. 3. Establish a target zone 15-25 feet away—this can be marked with a cone, hula hoop, or other visible marker. 4. Each player receives 3 foam rockets.
GAMEPLAY: 1. Player 1 inserts their first foam rocket into the launch tube. 2. Player 1 jumps on and stomps the air chamber pad firmly to launch the rocket. 3. Note where the rocket lands and measure its distance from the target zone. 4. Player 2 takes their turn with the same process using a different rocket. 5. Players alternate launching all three of their rockets, taking turns with each shot. 6. After each launch, record the distance from the target center (you can measure in steps or use a measuring tape for accuracy).
WINNING CONDITIONS: After both players have launched all three rockets, calculate each player's score. The player whose rocket lands closest to the target wins 1 point for that round. Optional: Play multiple rounds and keep a running score. Alternatively, play "Best of Three" where the first player to win 2 rounds wins the game. For a cooperative twist, work together to see how many rockets you can land within a certain distance of the target.
VARIATIONS FOR 2-PLAYERS: The game is naturally competitive for two players. To increase difficulty, reduce the target zone size, increase distance, or use multiple targets scattered around the yard. You can also create obstacle courses by adding cones or ropes to navigate around, requiring strategy in your launching angle and power.
History & Background
Stomp Rocket emerged in the early 2000s as a modern take on classic air-powered toy launchers that had entertained children for decades. The toy was designed by Josh Zuckerman and developed by Pretend Play, aiming to combine the simplicity of pneumatic toys with outdoor activity and competitive gameplay. The product quickly gained popularity among families seeking affordable outdoor entertainment that required minimal setup and could engage multiple players in active, screen-free play. Its rise coincided with a growing parental interest in toys that encourage physical movement and outdoor engagement, making it a staple in backyards across North America.
The game's design philosophy centers on the accessible yet physically engaging concept of stomping to generate power, which appeals to children's natural inclination toward active play while remaining safe and controlled. This mechanic has proven remarkably durable in the toy market, with various iterations and competitors entering the space over the years. Stomp Rocket's cultural significance lies in its role within the broader landscape of outdoor lawn games, bridging the gap between traditional activities like cornhole and modern STEM-influenced toys. The game emphasizes physics principles—air pressure, trajectory, and distance measurement—in an informal, fun context.
For two-player competition specifically, Stomp Rocket has evolved to support increasingly sophisticated rule variations and scoring systems. Players have developed house rules involving obstacle courses, multiple targets, and distance-based challenges that extend the game's replayability. The competitive nature of comparing launch distances naturally creates engaging head-to-head dynamics, making it ideal for sibling rivalries or friendly backyard competitions. Its relatively low cost and portability have also made it a popular choice for casual outdoor entertainment among adult players seeking nostalgic recreation, cementing its place in contemporary lawn game culture.
