About This Game

Soft baseball-like game. Hit the ball with a bat-shaped stick. Good for small yards.

How to Play

SETUP: Find a small, open yard or similar space. One player is designated as the pitcher, the other as the batter. Place a soft Stikball in the center of play. The pitcher stands approximately 20-30 feet from the batter, depending on space and player skill level.

GAMEPLAY: The pitcher tosses the soft ball underhand toward the batter at a moderate speed. The batter attempts to hit the ball with the bat-shaped stick. Unlike traditional baseball, there are no called strikes or balls—the batter swings at pitches they choose. After hitting the ball (or missing three consecutive pitches), the batter runs to a designated base or turning point and back to home, while the pitcher retrieves the ball and attempts to tag the runner or throw to a base before they return. If the batter successfully returns home without being tagged, they score one point. If tagged out, no point is scored.

SCORING & WINNING: Players alternate between pitcher and batter roles after each at-bat. The first player to score 11 points wins the game, though players can agree on alternative scoring targets (such as first to 7 or 21 points). Keep track of both players' scores clearly.

KEY MECHANICS: The soft ball minimizes injury risk, making this ideal for casual play in confined spaces. Hits that land outside designated boundary lines are automatic outs. A caught fly ball results in an automatic out. Players must agree on boundaries before starting to avoid disputes.

2-PLAYER ADAPTATION: Stikball traditionally accommodates larger groups playing in an organized field setting. For two-player play, simplify the rules by eliminating base-running complexity—the batter simply needs to reach a single designated point and return home safely. This streamlined version maintains competitive balance and keeps games moving quickly in smaller yards.

History & Background

Stikball emerged in the mid-20th century as an ingenious adaptation of baseball for urban and suburban neighborhoods with limited space. The game originated in densely populated areas where traditional baseball diamonds were impossible to construct, making it a natural evolution of street games played by children in cramped city blocks. By using a soft, lightweight ball and simplified rules, Stikball democratized America's pastime, allowing kids and families to enjoy baseball-inspired competition in backyards, parks, and small open spaces where conventional baseball was impractical.

The game gained particular popularity during the 1960s and 1970s as suburban expansion created countless small residential yards perfect for casual outdoor play. Stikball represented a cultural shift toward recreational games that prioritized accessibility and safety over strict formality. The soft ball design was revolutionary for its time, significantly reducing injury risk compared to traditional hardball sports—a major factor in parental acceptance and widespread adoption among young players.

While Stikball traditionally thrived in group settings with multiple players and complex base-running, the modern two-player format has revitalized interest in the game for smaller households and intimate competitive play. This streamlined adaptation maintains the sport's essential appeal—the satisfying crack of bat meeting ball, the thrill of racing home, and the strategic interplay between pitcher and batter—while making it accessible to any pair of players with a small yard. Today, Stikball remains a beloved alternative to organized baseball, preserving a nostalgic connection to classic American recreation while remaining perfectly suited to contemporary backyard entertainment.
