🎯 Star Wars: Rebellion board game

About This Game

Galactic civil war in a box. The Empire hunts the Rebel base while the Alliance sparks hope across the galaxy.

How to Play

SETUP: Place the galaxy board between players. One player controls the Empire, the other the Rebellion. The Empire player places the Imperial fleet on the board and keeps the Rebel base location hidden on their faction sheet. The Rebellion player places initial rebel units on the board and draws mission cards. Each player receives their faction-specific deck of cards.

GAMEPLAY: Players alternate turns. On your turn: (1) Play a card from your hand to activate a system on the board or trigger special abilities, (2) Move your units accordingly—Empire ships hunt for the hidden base while Rebels complete missions to spread hope, (3) Resolve any combat or mission effects, (4) Draw back up to your hand limit.

EMPIRE OBJECTIVES: Search the board systematically to locate and destroy the Rebel base. Use probe droids, star destroyers, and intelligence cards to narrow down the base's location. The Empire wins immediately if they find and eliminate the base.

REBELLION OBJECTIVES: Complete mission cards across the galaxy to increase the rebellion meter. Missions require moving units to specific systems and surviving Imperial attacks. The Rebellion wins if they complete enough missions to reach the victory threshold before the Empire finds their base.

COMBAT: When units occupy the same system, resolve combat using dice and card abilities. The attacker rolls first; defenders respond with their own rolls and cards.

HIDDEN INFORMATION: The Rebellion's base location remains hidden throughout the game (written on the faction sheet). The Empire must deduce its location through systematic searching and failed search attempts that provide clues.

WINNING CONDITIONS: Empire wins by locating and destroying the Rebel base. Rebellion wins by completing their mission objectives before being discovered. The game creates asymmetrical, narrative-driven tension perfect for two players seeking strategic depth and hidden information gameplay.

History & Background

Star Wars: Rebellion was designed by Michael Kiesling and published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2016, arriving as one of the most ambitious Star Wars board games ever created. The game emerged during a golden age of asymmetrical board game design, where designers increasingly explored how hidden information and opposing objectives could create narrative-driven experiences beyond traditional symmetric gameplay. Rebellion captured the imagination of both casual Star Wars fans and serious board gamers by translating the galactic conflict into a two-player strategic experience that emphasized theme as much as mechanics.

The design brilliantly captures the asymmetry inherent to the original trilogy's Rebel-versus-Empire conflict. Rather than giving both players equal information and resources, the game embraces the thematic reality that the Empire possesses overwhelming military power while the Rebellion relies on cunning, dispersal, and hope. This design philosophy resonates with players who appreciate games where victory doesn't always favor the player with more pieces—instead, it rewards clever strategy and bold decision-making. The hidden base mechanic became a signature element that distinguishes Rebellion from countless other Star Wars games, creating genuine suspense as the Empire systematically hunts and the Rebellion works against the clock.

Since its release, Rebellion has solidified its place in the board game hobby as a premier example of two-player asymmetrical gaming. Its influence extends beyond Star Wars enthusiasts; competitive players and strategic designers study Rebellion's balance between hidden information, card play, and spatial strategy. The game spawned an expansion, *Rise of the Empire*, that deepened the experience with additional characters and missions. Today, Rebellion remains a benchmark for how licensed games can deliver both thematic authenticity and mechanical depth, proving that board games can effectively recreate the tension and drama of beloved film universes while providing engaging strategic gameplay for two dedicated players.
