History & Background

Razz emerged from the broader family of Seven Card Stud variants that gained popularity in American poker rooms during the mid-20th century. As poker evolved from a simple wagering game into a complex strategic pursuit, players began experimenting with "lowball" formats—games where traditional hand rankings were inverted. Razz crystallized as the definitive low-hand version of Seven Card Stud, becoming a staple in both casual home games and professional poker circles. The game's name itself reflects its playful nature, derived from the slang "razz," which captures the ironic humor of trying to make the worst possible hand by traditional poker standards.

The strategic inversion at the heart of Razz fundamentally changed how players approached hand selection and betting psychology. Unlike standard Stud, where premium hands like pairs and high cards drive action, Razz rewards players who successfully build low unpaired hands while keeping their opponents guessing about the true strength of their holdings. The rule that straights and flushes don't count against you, combined with aces being permanently low, creates a unique dynamic where the legendary "wheel" (A-2-3-4-5) stands as the mathematical best hand possible.

Razz gained particular prominence during the poker boom of the late 1970s and 1980s, becoming a fixture in high-stakes mixed games alongside variants like H.O.R.S.E. (which includes Razz as one of its rotations). The game's emphasis on careful observation of exposed cards and reading opponents' hand strength made it particularly appealing to skilled players. In two-player format, Razz becomes especially tactical, as each visible card carries heightened significance with fewer total cards in play. Today, Razz remains a respected variant in both casual home games and professional tournaments, valued for its distinct skill set and engaging strategic depth.
