History & Background
Spite and Malice, also known as Cat and Mouse or by its British name Scarne's Patience, emerged from the broader family of competitive solitaire games that gained popularity during the early 20th century. The game's development was closely tied to John Scarne, a renowned card game expert and magician who documented and refined many patience games in the 1950s and 1960s. Scarne's comprehensive work on card games helped establish Spite and Malice as a legitimate two-player competitive variant, distinguishing it from traditional solo patience games that had dominated European parlor culture since the Victorian era.
The game's name itself reflects its playful natureāthe strategic blocking mechanics create situations where players must choose between advancing their own position and deliberately hindering their opponent's progress. This emphasis on player interaction transformed what could have been a simple race into a game rich with tactical decisions. The concept of personal discard piles combined with shared building piles created an elegant system that balanced luck with skill, making the game accessible to casual players while rewarding strategic thinking.
Spite and Malice experienced renewed interest in the 2000s and 2010s as part of a broader revival of traditional card games and two-player games. Gaming communities rediscovered its appeal as a quick, portable game that didn't require electronic devices or complex equipment. The game's relatively short play timeā20 to 45 minutesāmade it perfect for competitive play sessions, and its moderate complexity (3 out of 5) ensured that both beginners and experienced players could enjoy it. Today, Spite and Malice remains a beloved choice for those seeking head-to-head card game competition, maintaining its status as a classic example of how simple rules can generate meaningful strategic depth.
