About This Game

A spatial puzzle game where players stack number-shaped tiles to build the highest tower they can. Higher layers score more points, but tiles must be fully supported. Everyone uses the same pieces — pure puzzle skill decides the winner.

How to Play

  1. Flip a card to reveal which number tile everyone places this round
  2. All players simultaneously place that number tile on their personal area
  3. Ground level scores nothing; level 1 = tile value x1; level 2 = tile value x2, etc.
  4. Placement rules: tile must rest flat, fully supported, and cover parts of at least 2 different tiles below
  5. Tiles cannot overhang empty space
  6. Cannot be moved once placed
  7. Continue until all 20 cards are drawn
  8. Add up your scoring. Highest total wins

History & Background

NMBR 9 emerged from designer Peter Wichmann's fascination with spatial reasoning and competitive puzzle design, first published by Winning Moves in 2016. The game distills the essence of tile-placement strategy into a deceptively simple mechanic: everyone draws from the same deck, plays simultaneously, and must make real-time architectural decisions under no time pressure. What makes NMBR 9 particularly elegant is its mathematical purity—there's no hidden information, no luck beyond card draw order, and no negotiation. The game has gained a devoted following among puzzle enthusiasts and abstract game fans who appreciate its minimalist design philosophy and the stark reality that skill differences become immediately apparent. In head-to-head play, NMBR 9 creates an intense psychological battle where you can see your opponent's tower growing beside yours in real time, forcing difficult risk-reward calculations on every single placement. The game's enduring appeal lies in how it rewards spatial visualization and forward-planning while remaining accessible to newcomers—complexity emerges naturally from constraints rather than rulebook length. Since its release, it has become a staple recommendation for players seeking pure puzzle competition without theme or randomness interference.
