🃏 SET card deck (81 cards)

About This Game

A visual perception game where players race to find groups of three cards that form a 'set' based on four attributes: shape, color, number, and shading. Each attribute must be either all the same or all different across the three cards.

How to Play

**Objective:** Find more "SETs" than your opponent.

**What is a SET?** Three cards where each of 4 features (Number, Shape, Color, Shading) is either all the same or all different across the three cards.

**How to Play:**

  1. Lay out 12 cards face-up
  2. Both players simultaneously search for SETs
  3. Call "SET!" and point out 3 cards; if correct, take them (1 point); if wrong, wait 1 turn
  4. Deal 3 replacements; if no SET exists in 12 cards, add 3 more

**Winning:** Play through the 81-card deck; most SETs wins.

History & Background

SET was created in 1974 by Marsha Falco, a geneticist who developed the game while studying patterns in her research. Originally designed as a teaching tool to help visualize genetic variations, Falco realized the game's elegant mathematical structure made it entertaining beyond the classroom. The game was first published by Parker Brothers in 1974 and has since become a modern classic, winning numerous awards including selection as one of "Games Magazine's" 100 greatest games of all time.

The brilliance of SET lies in its deceptively simple ruleset masking deep mathematical complexity. Each card's four attributes create 81 unique combinations, meaning there are always multiple valid solutions on the table—a property that keeps the game fresh and challenging regardless of player skill level. This balance between accessibility and depth helped SET gain a devoted following among both casual players and serious game enthusiasts.

Over decades, SET has remained largely unchanged, a testament to Falco's original design. The game has spawned competitive tournaments, digital versions, and educational adaptations in classrooms worldwide. For two players specifically, SET transforms into an intense head-to-head duel where visual acuity and pattern recognition directly translate to victory, making it an ideal competitive experience that rewards practice and develops perception skills.
