What You'll Need
About This Game
Like bocce but with a twist - you throw both a ball AND a ring at the target. Random challenges each round.
How to Play
SETUP: Each player selects a color and receives their set of throwing materials (one ball and one ring per round). Place the target on a flat lawn area, approximately 20-30 feet away from the throwing line. Before each round, randomly draw a challenge card that modifies gameplay for that round.
GAMEPLAY: Players alternate turns, starting with Player 1. On your turn, throw both your ball and your ring at the target. The order of throws (ball first or ring first) is your choice, and you may aim for different scoring zones.
Each round features a random challenge that changes how points are scored or what counts as valid. Challenges might include: "rings only count," "closest object wins the round," "double points for combination hits," or "alternate throwing positions."
After both players complete their throws, score the round according to the current challenge rules. Standard scoring typically awards points based on proximity to the target—closest object to center scores the most points. However, challenges may reward combination hits (both ball AND ring close to target) or eliminate certain scoring methods entirely.
WINNING CONDITIONS: Play continues for a predetermined number of rounds (typically 5-7 rounds). The player with the highest cumulative score after all rounds wins the game. Alternatively, play to a target score (first to 21 points, for example).
ADAPTATION NOTE: Boochie traditionally accommodates 2-4 players in team or individual formats. For 2-player play, simply eliminate team rotations and have each player throw individually each turn. This streamlined format speeds up gameplay and creates direct head-to-head competition.
History & Background
Boochie emerges from the rich tradition of tossing games that have entertained players for centuries, drawing inspiration from classics like bocce, horseshoes, and cornhole. While bocce dates back to ancient Rome and has remained relatively unchanged, Boochie represents a modern evolution of lawn game design, introducing dynamic gameplay elements that keep matches unpredictable and engaging. The game was developed to address a common challenge in traditional tossing games: the repetitive nature of identical rounds. By incorporating random challenge cards that modify scoring rules each round, Boochie transforms what could be a straightforward proximity game into a strategic experience that rewards both skill and adaptability.
The dual-object throwing mechanic—requiring players to master both ball and ring trajectory—adds complexity without overwhelming newcomers. This design choice makes Boochie particularly appealing for two-player competition, where direct head-to-head matchups demand not only accuracy but also tactical decision-making about throw order and target zones. The challenge system became Boochie's defining feature, introducing elements like bonus point multipliers, combination scoring, and position restrictions that force players to constantly reassess their strategies.
Since its introduction to the lawn game market, Boochie has gained traction among casual players seeking alternatives to traditional bocce while maintaining that accessible outdoor appeal. The game fits naturally into backyard entertainment, family gatherings, and friendly competitions. Its relatively quick 20-30 minute playtime makes it ideal for tournament-style play with multiple matches, while the 2-player format strips away unnecessary complexity and delivers pure competitive gameplay. Today, Boochie represents a modern approach to lawn games—honoring timeless tossing mechanics while embracing innovation through variable rules and fresh challenges.
