About This Game

Throw bolas at a ladder. Different rungs score different points. Like ladder toss with a twist.

How to Play

SETUP: Place the Blongo Ball ladder on flat ground between both players, approximately 10-15 feet apart. Each player should have a designated throwing line. Assign each player a color of bolas (typically red and blue). Decide who goes first by coin flip or mutual agreement.

GAMEPLAY: Players take turns throwing their bolas at the ladder rungs from behind their throwing line. Each rung on the ladder is worth a different point value—typically the top rung is worth 3 points, the middle rung is worth 2 points, and the bottom rung is worth 1 point (confirm exact values with your specific set). A bola scores points if it wraps around a rung. If a bola wraps around a rung that already has an opponent's bola, it cancels out that bola and removes it from play, a mechanic that adds competitive strategy.

Each player throws all their bolas in one turn before scoring is calculated. After both players have thrown all bolas, tally the points for remaining bolas on the ladder.

WINNING: The first player to reach an agreed-upon score (typically 21 points) wins the game. Alternatively, play a set number of rounds and the player with the highest total score wins. Players can also agree to play multiple rounds and track cumulative scores across games.

KEY RULES: Throws must be made from behind the designated throwing line. Bolas that don't wrap around the ladder score no points. If a bola wraps around a rung already occupied by an opponent's bola, the opponent's bola is removed and scores nothing. The game ends immediately when a player reaches the target score.

History & Background

Blongo Ball represents a modern evolution of traditional tossing games that have been played across cultures for centuries. The game draws inspiration from horseshoes, cornhole, and ladder toss—classic outdoor games that have entertained people for generations. The ladder toss variant, which emerged in the early 2000s as a backyard game phenomenon, provided the foundation for Blongo Ball's unique twist on the traditional format. By introducing the mechanic of bolas wrapping around ladder rungs rather than simply landing in designated zones, Blongo Ball added a new layer of skill and strategy to the casual lawn game category.

The game gained popularity as part of the broader trend of outdoor entertainment products designed for two players seeking competitive yet accessible recreational activities. Blongo Ball's appeal lies in its simplicity combined with genuine strategic depth—the ability to knock an opponent's bola off the ladder creates exciting moments of competition and reversal of fortune that keep matches engaging and unpredictable. This mechanic transformed what could have been a straightforward accuracy game into a dynamic back-and-forth battle.

Today, Blongo Ball occupies a special niche in the lawn games market, appealing to casual players who want something more interactive than horseshoes but equally portable and easy to learn. The game has become a fixture at backyard gatherings, tailgates, and casual sporting events, embodying the spirit of friendly competition that defines modern recreational gaming. Its 10-20 minute play time makes it perfect for quick matches between friends or family members, while the customizable winning conditions allow players to adapt the game to their preferred intensity level and available time.
