What You'll Need
About This Game
Build and manage a modern zoo, acquiring animals and supporting conservation projects. A deep card-driven game with variable card powers and multiple strategies.
How to Play
SETUP: Each player receives a personal zoo board, a hand of 7 cards drawn from the shared deck, and 5 action tokens. Place the conservation project cards and animal cards in the center. Set the round tracker and income track.
GAMEPLAY: On your turn, spend action tokens to perform one of four main actions: (1) Play a card to your zoo or conservation area—cards represent animals, enclosures, or zoo improvements with unique effects; (2) Draw cards from the deck or discard pile; (3) Take a conservation project to gain its benefits and contribute to global goals; (4) Use a special ability from your zoo.
Cards are the core mechanic. Each card has a power that triggers when played or during specific phases, creating variable interactions between your zoo and your opponent's. You'll carefully manage your hand, deciding which cards to play now versus hold for better timing.
At the end of each round, players gain income based on their zoo's size and efficiency, which they spend on new animals and enclosures. The game progresses through 4 rounds total.
WINNING: After round 4, calculate final points from your animals (based on rarity and conservation status), enclosures, conservation projects, and special achievements. The player with the highest score wins. In 2-player mode, the competitive nature intensifies—you're directly competing for limited animals and projects while managing your own zoo's unique strategy.
KEY 2-PLAYER DIFFERENCES: While Ark Nova plays well at 2 players without special rules, the game's card-driven nature means you'll experience tighter decision-making. With fewer opponents taking turns before you, you have less time to adapt your strategy, making hand management and planning critical. Direct competition for high-value animals and projects becomes more pronounced.
History & Background
Ark Nova was designed by Vital Lacerda and released by Feuerland Spiele in 2021, quickly establishing itself as one of the most acclaimed modern board games. Lacerda, a Portuguese designer known for creating mechanically intricate and thematically rich games, drew inspiration from his passion for conservation and animal welfare. The game emerged during a period of heightened global awareness about biodiversity loss and the role of zoos in modern conservation efforts, making its theme both timely and purposeful. Rather than presenting zoos as mere entertainment venues, Ark Nova positions them as vital conservation institutions, granting the game educational depth alongside strategic gameplay.
The game's development focused on creating a card-driven engine-building system that would authentically reflect the complexity of zoo management while remaining engaging for players. Lacerda's design philosophy emphasizes variable player powers and emergent interactions—no two games play identically due to the unique combination of cards that appear in each playthrough. This design choice has proven particularly effective in 2-player matches, where the reduced player count creates intense decision-making pressure and makes every card selection feel consequential. The limited competition for resources between just two players amplifies the strategic tension that defines the experience.
Since its release, Ark Nova has garnered numerous awards and consistently ranks among the top strategy board games globally. The game resonates with players who appreciate both thematic authenticity and mechanical depth, attracting both euro-game enthusiasts and conservation-minded audiences. Its success has led to expansions and widespread recognition as a modern classic, demonstrating that deeply strategic games can also deliver meaningful thematic experiences. In 2-player format, the game's reputation as a thinker's game is fully realized, offering competitive players a rich decision space where careful planning, tactical card management, and long-term strategy determine victory.
