About This Game
Use single-word clue cards to describe a word. First team to guess wins the round.
How to Play
SETUP: Divide the Word Slam deck into two equal piles, one for each player. Each player shuffles their pile and places it face-down in front of them. Decide who goes first by any method you prefer.
GAMEPLAY: On your turn, draw the top card from your pile—this is the word your opponent must guess. You then draw five single-word clue cards from a shared clue deck. You have 60 seconds to give your opponent clues using only these five words, one clue per word card played. You must use the clue words exactly as printed; you cannot modify them, use synonyms, or give additional context.
Your opponent listens to your clues and tries to guess the target word. They can guess as many times as they want within the 60 seconds. If they guess correctly before time runs out, you score 1 point. If time expires without a correct guess, your opponent scores 1 point instead.
Take turns alternating roles: one player gives clues while the other guesses. Continue playing rounds until one player reaches 5 points (or agree on a different target score beforehand).
IMPORTANT NOTES: You cannot use the target word or any part of it in your clues. You cannot point, gesture, or communicate except through the five clue words. If you violate these rules, your opponent automatically scores the point for that round.
WINNING: The first player to reach your predetermined point target (typically 5 points) wins the game. This competitive 2-player adaptation transforms the original team-based game into a head-to-head battle of deduction and strategic word choice.
History & Background
Word Slam evolved from the classic party game Codenames, which was created by Czech game designer Vladimír Chvátil and released in 2015. Codenames became a global phenomenon, winning the prestigious Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) award in 2016 and spawning numerous variants. While Codenames was designed primarily as a team-based game, the success of competitive word-deduction games led designers to explore head-to-head adaptations. Word Slam represents this evolution, transforming the collaborative essence of clue-giving into a direct duel between two players.
The 2-player competitive format of Word Slam capitalizes on a growing trend in modern board gaming toward intimate, quick-playing games suitable for couples and small gatherings. By distilling the core mechanic—using limited, single-word clues to guide someone toward a target word—into a faster, more streamlined experience, Word Slam offers the intellectual challenge of its predecessors without requiring a large group. This accessibility has made it particularly popular among casual gamers and those seeking engaging date-night entertainment.
Word Slam's cultural significance lies in its celebration of linguistic creativity and strategic thinking in a compressed timeframe. The game's 60-second rounds and five-card clue restriction create meaningful decision-making moments where players must prioritize which associations to highlight. The competitive nature encourages players to develop nuanced understanding of language and psychology, predicting what clues their opponent might find most helpful or misleading. As tabletop gaming continues to emphasize social connection and quick play sessions, Word Slam exemplifies how classic party game mechanics can be reimagined for intimate, competitive play between two dedicated opponents.
