About This Game

A word-guessing game where one player thinks of a word and the other guesses letters. Wrong guesses add body parts to a stick figure - too many and you're 'hanged'!

How to Play

**Objective:** Guess the secret word before the hangman figure is fully drawn.

**Setup:** Word Setter thinks of a word and draws dashes representing each letter.

**How to Play:**

  1. Guesser calls one letter at a time
  2. Correct → fill in all instances; Wrong → draw one body part (head, body, 2 arms, 2 legs = 6 wrong guesses)
  3. Guesser wins by completing the word; Word Setter wins if full hangman is drawn

**Strategy:** Start with common letters: E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R.

History & Background

Hangman's exact origins are unclear, but the game likely evolved from earlier word-guessing pastimes in the 19th century. Some game historians trace its roots to Victorian parlor games, where intellectual challenges like this thrived among literate households. The game gained widespread popularity in the 20th century as a simple, accessible entertainment requiring nothing but paper and pencil—making it perfect for schools, offices, and casual gatherings.

The game's name reflects a darker historical period, though the actual gameplay is entirely innocent. Rather than representing true capital punishment, the hangman figure serves as a visual progress tracker that transforms the abstract concept of "running out of chances" into something concrete and dramatic. This visual element became crucial to the game's enduring appeal, as it added suspense and urgency to each round.

Hangman achieved remarkable staying power partly because it requires no special equipment and works perfectly as a two-player game. It teaches vocabulary, spelling, and logical deduction while providing genuine competitive tension. The game has been adapted into countless digital formats and remains a staple in classrooms and casual gaming circles worldwide. Its simplicity is its strength—no rules to memorize, no board to set up, just pure psychological gameplay between two minds trying to outwit each other.
