What You'll Need
About This Game
Steal words by adding letters. Cutthroat anagram game. Nothing is safe until the game ends.
How to Play
SETUP: Shuffle all letter tiles and place them face-down in a draw pile. Each player starts with an empty play area in front of them.
GAMEPLAY
- Players alternate turns. On your turn, draw one letter tile from the pile and place it in your play area.
- After placing your tile, you may form or modify words using any of your tiles. Words must be at least 2 letters long and be valid dictionary words.
- Here's the cutthroat element: You may also ADD a letter to an opponent's word to create a new, valid word. When you do this, you steal that word—it moves to your play area, and your opponent loses it.
- If a word cannot be extended into another valid word, it is considered "safe" and locked. Locked words cannot be stolen.
- Players must announce all words in their play area at the end of their turn so both players can verify validity.
- If a word is challenged as invalid, the challenging player must prove it's not a real word. If correct, the word is removed from play. If incorrect, play continues unchanged.
- Continue drawing and playing until all tiles are drawn from the pile.
WINNING CONDITIONS
- The game ends when no more tiles can be drawn and no more legal moves are possible.
- Each valid word in your play area at game's end scores 1 point.
- The player with the most points wins.
- In case of a tie, the player with the longest word wins the tiebreaker.
2-PLAYER ADAPTATION: Snatch-It traditionally plays 2-4 players with identical rules. The 2-player version maintains all core mechanics but creates a more intense, head-to-head experience where word theft is the primary strategy. Players cannot hide behind larger player counts, making every decision critical.
History & Background
Snatch-It emerged in the early 2000s as a modern evolution of classic word-building games like Scrabble and Bananagrams, designed to inject competitive chaos into the traditionally methodical world of word games. The game's creator sought to address a common complaint among word game enthusiasts: that established words often became untouchable fortresses, eliminating the dynamic tension that comes from constant threat. By introducing the mechanic of "stealing" words through letter addition, Snatch-It transformed word games from solitary construction projects into cutthroat battles of linguistic creativity and quick thinking.
The game gained significant traction in the indie board game community throughout the 2010s, particularly appealing to players who enjoyed both competitive strategy and word puzzles. Its elegant simplicity—requiring only letter tiles and a basic ruleset—made it accessible to casual players while maintaining enough depth for serious word game competitors. The 2-player variant became especially popular, as the head-to-head format intensified the psychological warfare inherent in the theft mechanic. Players must constantly balance offense and defense, deciding whether to secure their words with unextendable letter combinations or risk leaving them vulnerable for the sake of strategic positioning.
Today, Snatch-It has established itself as a beloved title among word game enthusiasts and competitive board gamers alike. Its influence has spawned numerous variants and inspired other designers to reconsider how theft and modification mechanics could enliven traditional word-building gameplay. The 2-player experience, in particular, has become a favorite for game nights and tournaments, where the intensity of one-on-one competition and the constant threat of word theft create memorable, nail-biting moments that keep players engaged from first tile to last.
