History & Background

Reversi emerged in the late 19th century as a Victorian parlor game, invented by British players Lewis Waterman and John W. Mollett in 1883. The game gained popularity across Europe and America as a chess alternative that was easier to learn but equally rewarding for strategic thinking. Its brilliance lies in its deceptive simplicity: while anyone can grasp the core mechanic of flipping opponent pieces in moments, mastering position control and lookahead strategy requires genuine skill. The game became a cultural phenomenon in Japan during the 1970s under the name 'Othello,' inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy of manipulation and reversals of fortune—a fitting literary parallel for a game where fortunes shift dramatically. This Japanese adoption transformed Reversi into a competitive pursuit with world championships and professional players. The paper version has remained beloved because it requires nothing but pencil and grid, making it instantly accessible anywhere. Today, Reversi stands as one of gaming's greatest examples of 'easy to learn, hard to master,' captivating two players in tactical duels that can swing from apparent victory to defeat in a single move. Its enduring appeal lies in the satisfying moment when careful positioning suddenly flips multiple opponent pieces at once, rewarding patience and foresight.
