How to Play
What You Need
- 2 players
- No equipment needed — just your hands and voice
Setup
- Agree on the winning point target (typically 5, 7, or 10 points)
- Players stand or sit facing each other within arm's reach
Gameplay
- Both players simultaneously extend one hand, showing 0 to 5 fingers
- At the exact same moment, each player calls out a number — their guess for the total fingers shown by both players combined
- The total can range from 0 (both fists) to 10 (both open palms)
- If exactly one player guesses the correct total, that player scores 1 point
- If both players guess correctly, or both guess wrong, no point is scored
- Play the next round immediately — the game is continuous and fast
Calling and Timing
- Both the throw and the call must happen simultaneously
- Calling after seeing your opponent's hand is not allowed
- In competitive play, a neutral observer watches for timing violations
Scoring
- 1 point to the player who correctly guesses the combined total
- No points if both players are right or both are wrong
- First to the agreed target wins the round
Winning
- First player to reach the agreed point total wins the game
Strategy Tips
- The most common throws are 2 and 3 fingers — guessing the middle range (4-6) covers the highest-probability totals
- Watch for patterns: opponents often repeat successful throws
- Alternating between a fist and an open palm with matching high/low guesses is an unpredictable strategy
- Speed and confidence matter — hesitating signals your intent

- It is played across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and parts of Asia under many names
History & Background
Morra is one of the oldest known hand games, with roots tracing back to ancient Rome and Greece around 2,000 years ago. Roman soldiers played the game during their downtime, and it became so popular that it was documented by classical writers including Pliny and Juvenal. The game was believed to have originated even earlier in ancient Greece, where it served both as entertainment and as a method for making quick decisions between two people.
Throughout the centuries, Morra spread across Mediterranean cultures and eventually became a staple in Italian, Spanish, and Middle Eastern communities. It remained relatively unchanged from its ancient form, testament to how perfectly the game mechanics balance luck, psychology, and quick thinking. The game's simplicity made it accessible to all social classes—from soldiers to scholars—and it required no materials or special equipment, making it ideal for spontaneous play anywhere.
In the modern era, Morra has experienced a resurgence as people rediscover the appeal of quick, skill-based games that require no smartphones or boards. It remains popular in Mediterranean countries and has found new audiences among game enthusiasts seeking authentic, zero-setup entertainment. The game exemplifies timeless two-player competition: success depends on reading your opponent's patterns, managing your own tells, and making split-second decisions under pressure.
