About This Game

Unique deck game - every deck is different and can't be modified. Just play!

How to Play

SETUP: Each player receives one Keyforge deck (shuffled and ready to play). Place both decks in front of you. Each player starts with 0 Aember (the game's resource) and needs to forge 3 Keys to win. Keys cost 6 Aember each.

GAMEPLAY: Players alternate turns. On your turn: (1) Announce which House you're playing (each deck contains three Houses with unique cards). (2) Play any cards from your hand that belong to that House in any order. (3) Use each card's abilities as written. (4) Fight with creatures—tap your creatures to deal damage to opponent's creatures; creatures with equal or greater power destroy defending creatures. (5) Collect Aember from card effects and creature bonuses. (6) Play Artifacts and Upgrades to boost your position. (7) End your turn by drawing back up to a hand size of 6 cards.

KEY MECHANICS: Creatures stay in play between turns. Damage carries over—creatures must be fully healed to survive another fight. Aember can be stolen by opponent abilities. The Chains mechanic may lock cards temporarily, preventing their play.

WINNING: The first player to forge 3 Keys wins. You forge a Key when you have 6 or more Aember during your turn; spend that Aember immediately to forge one Key. Repeat until you reach 3 Keys.

TWO-PLAYER NOTE: Keyforge is designed for 2-4 players and plays perfectly with two. The standard rules require no adaptation—simply follow the standard gameplay with direct competition. Each deck is uniquely generated, ensuring every match feels fresh and different.

KEY RULES REMINDER: You must play a House each turn (you can't pass), but you can choose which House. Cards with Elusive are harder to destroy. Cards with Taunt must be attacked if possible. Pay attention to card text—many have special abilities that trigger under specific conditions.

History & Background

Keyforge was created by Richard Garfield, the legendary designer behind Magic: The Gathering, and published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2018. Garfield's vision for Keyforge was revolutionary: a card game where deck construction was entirely removed from the equation. Instead of spending hours or money building the perfect deck, every Keyforge deck is algorithmically generated to be unique and balanced, with no two decks ever being identical. This innovation addressed a long-standing pain point in collectible card games—the pay-to-win aspect of deck building—making Keyforge uniquely accessible to casual players.

The game's core concept centers on collecting Aember and forging Keys, a mechanic that creates a clear, understandable win condition while maintaining strategic depth. The three-House system within each deck ensures varied gameplay styles and encourages players to master their specific deck's quirks and synergies. When Keyforge launched, it garnered significant attention from both traditional card game enthusiasts and newcomers curious about Garfield's latest creation.

Since its release, Keyforge has grown into a thriving competitive and casual community, with multiple sets released and a dedicated esports scene. The game's elegance lies in how it balances accessibility with strategic complexity—new players can jump in immediately without deck-building knowledge, while experienced players discover intricate combos and timing nuances within their decks. For two-player matches, Keyforge delivers quick, engaging gameplay where every deck tells a different story, making it an excellent choice for players seeking variety without the traditional CCG commitment.
