What You'll Need

🃏 In a Pickle card game

About This Game

Fit words inside or outside each other. Can a PICKLE fit in a GROCERY BAG? Silly word sizing.

How to Play

SETUP: Shuffle the deck of word cards and place them in a draw pile between both players. Each player starts with an empty hand. Decide who goes first.

GAMEPLAY: On your turn, draw a card from the pile and read the word aloud. Both players must then decide whether the word on your newly drawn card can physically fit INSIDE or OUTSIDE the word card you drew on your previous turn. For example, if you previously drew "GROCERY BAG," you must determine if "PICKLE" could fit inside or outside it.

Players take turns arguing their case. You have 30 seconds to make your pitch using logic, creativity, or humor to convince your opponent. Common sense doesn't apply here—this is about silly, imaginative sizing! For instance, could a PICKLE actually fit in a GROCERY BAG? Sure! But could a WHALE fit in a BATHTUB if you really think about it creatively? Maybe!

After both players present their arguments, the player whose turn it was makes the final ruling: IN or OUT. They score 1 point if the ruling is agreed upon by both players, or 2 points if they convinced the other player to change their mind.

If players cannot reach a decision after discussion, consult the included judgment cards for official rulings, or flip a coin.

WINNING CONDITION: First player to reach 10 points wins the game. Alternatively, play through the entire deck and whoever has the most points at the end is victorious.

NOTE: In a Pickle traditionally supports 2-4 players. The 2-player version uses the same core rules but intensifies head-to-head debate, making it a competitive word-sizing duel rather than a group party game.

History & Background

In a Pickle emerged from the modern party game renaissance of the 2010s, when designers began creating games focused on creative argumentation and lateral thinking rather than traditional mechanics. The game was developed to capture the essence of those ridiculous late-night conversations where friends debate impossible "what-if" scenarios with complete seriousness.

The designer drew inspiration from classic word association games and "would you rather" style discussions, but wanted a structure that forced players to defend absurd propositions. The central mechanic—determining if one word can fit inside or outside another—was deliberately chosen for its openness to interpretation, making it impossible to settle debates through logic alone. This design philosophy resonates with modern gamers who appreciate games that prioritize social interaction and humor over rigid rules.

Since its release, In a Pickle has gained recognition in the indie board game community for its accessibility and replayability. The game's simple premise masks surprising depth in argumentation strategy. It found particular popularity among adult game groups and stream communities where the entertaining debates between players became the main attraction. The game exemplifies how contemporary word games have evolved beyond crossword-style puzzles toward interactive, social experiences that celebrate creative thinking and friendly competition rather than vocabulary expertise.
