How to Play

**Setup:** Drop the ball through the serving hole on the side of the table (or at midfield).

**Basic play:** Grip the rods and move them side-to-side and rotate the figures to kick the ball. You control 4 rods: 1 goalkeeper, 2 defenders, 5 midfielders, 3 attackers.

**Key rules:**

  • **No spinning:** Rods cannot rotate more than 360 degrees before or after contacting the ball. Spinning is illegal in competitive play.
  • **No jarring:** Don't slam the table or rods to dislodge the ball.
  • **Dead ball:** If the ball stops where no figure can reach it, re-serve.
  • **Serving after goals:** The team that was scored on serves the next ball.

**Winning:** First to 5 goals (casual) or 5 out of 9 (competitive). Switch sides after each game.

**Tournament rules (ITSF):** Players get 10-15 seconds per rod to advance the ball. No distracting opponents. Timeouts available.

History & Background

Harold Searles Thornton patented foosball in the UK in 1921, inspired by watching football (soccer). The game spread through European cafes and bars in the 1950s-60s. The first foosball World Championship was held in 1975 in the United States, organized by the Tournament Soccer federation. Germany, France, and Austria are traditional strongholds. The International Table Soccer Federation (ITSF) now governs competitive play.
