About This Game

Give coded clues to your team while opponents try to intercept. Mind-bending word game.

How to Play

  1. Each team has a screen with 4 secret words (numbered 1-4)
  2. One player gives 3 coded clues that map to 3 of their words
  • E.g., if code is 2-4-1: clue for word #2, then #4, then #1
  1. Your partner must guess your code (2-4-1) from the clues
  2. Opponents also try to guess your code (they see your clues each round)
  3. If your partner fails to guess: white token (2 = you lose)
  4. If opponents correctly guess your code: black token (2 = they win)
  5. Balance: clues must be clear enough for partner but vague to opponents
  6. As rounds progress, opponents build knowledge of your secret words

History & Background

Decrypto was created by Thomas Dagenais-Lespérance and published by Iello in 2018, quickly establishing itself as a modern classic in the word game genre. The game emerged during a golden era of party and word games, building upon the success of titles like Codenames but introducing a unique twist: the tension of simultaneous cooperative and competitive play. Dagenais-Lespérance designed Decrypto to capture the thrill of espionage, where communication is both your greatest asset and your vulnerability.

The game's mechanics reflect real cryptography principles, where clarity for your intended audience must be balanced against obscurity for your adversaries. This elegant design caught the attention of the gaming community, earning widespread acclaim and multiple award nominations. Decrypto's appeal lies in its psychological depth—players must constantly evaluate how their clues will be interpreted by both allies and opponents, creating a dynamic strategic layer that evolves as the game progresses.

What makes Decrypto particularly significant in two-player formats is how it transforms from a party game into an intimate duel of wits. The 20-30 minute play time makes it accessible for casual gaming sessions, while the complexity rating of 3/5 ensures enough strategic depth to satisfy experienced players. Since its release, Decrypto has spawned expansions and digital versions, cementing its place in contemporary board gaming culture. The game's success demonstrates the enduring appeal of word-based challenges and the universal enjoyment of outsmarting opponents through clever communication and deduction.
